Does anyone have any suggestions or any experience with trying to get financial assistance while dealing with a dead beat dad who is 5 months behind in child support? My income barely covers my mortgage and daycare - nothing left over for other expenses - so I've cashed in my IRA account at huge expense, exhausted family loans; can't get money from the house as he has killed my credit; tried to get some financial assistance for daycare but I make too much. I'm stuck somewhere in between having no money - and making too much to qualify for any of the assistance that I can find. Help! Has anyone else been in this situation and found a way to get some help? I'm not afraid to work - and I'd take on a second job if I could work from home at night. But I won't sacrifice anymore time away from my kids than I already do - as I work 50 hours per week away from home.
about the only thing i could think of was tutoring - is there anything you can teach from your home? piano, software, cooking? maybe you could babysit? i hope you get help here, best of luck

I am in the same situtation. The state will take over handling the back support if it is in excess of $5k. Contact the county courthouse where your divorce paperwork was filed. It is my understanding that this won't cost you anything. They will then track him down, if you don't know where he is and go from there. His wages then can be garnished etc. Obviously if he is doing his best to avoid paying, there isn't much the state can do. However, getting that in place, will help when and if he does get or have a job. I also was advised that the back child support accrues 9% interest. Good luck. Depending on what your qualifications and schooling background are, some community colleges will hire professionals to teach their online classes.
Be careful of some of the work-at-home "options" however. There are quite a few scams out there. If you are the social type, there are many "party" businesses (pampered chef, tastefully simple, simply homemade, and more) where you can find hosts for the parties where you talk about the products and make money based on the sales. Usually these also involve a pyramid-style scheme where you can get others to work "under" you and you get money off their sales too. There are also sales opportunities where you can market the products without throwing parties (I don't think Melaluca does parties, for example) but they tend to be aimed at getting other people under you in the pyramid. While all these companies are legit - they are all about sales and marketing.
Another option for work-at-home is to become a Virtual Assistant - a secretary from home, depending on what equipment/software you have and your expertise. I'm not sure how well this works as a night job though - I did it during the day for a while after my first child was born. It was more a matter of looking at my available skill set and seeing what I could market. Currently, I do some work from home as a web designer, although I've gone back to school for some classes to brush-up and advance my skills in silversmithing, so I can eventually move to jewelry design instead. There may be a possibility that you could receive some assistance if you went back to school (there are online classes too!) to advance your career.
Whiel I'm not in the same position as you are, I've been looking at work-from-home options for a while to supplement my husband as he goes through a career change that has been h*** o* our income. I've looked at daycare costs and it seems like I'd have to shell out most of what I made if I went back to work at an office again! Nevermind dealing with the mortgage too. You definitely sound stuck between a rock and a hard place at the moment (*hugs*). Good luck!

I wish I cold offer some advise. Sadly, I have been in the same situation for five years, and it is hard to keep your head above water and no help is out there for single moms that just want to be able to pay their bills.
If you have a spare room in your house, maybe you could rent it out to another single mom for some extra income. Also consider downsizing to a smaller home or finding a cheaper daycare alternative. It was a big help to me to go from $300 per week to $100 per week in daycare costs.
