Imput on Child Id Cards

I recently made id cards for my daughters and niece. Who should hold onto them?
At first I was thinking the parent in case something happened to the child. Then I thought that if something happened to one of them, ex. abduction, then they could leave it somewhere for someone to find. I don't think negative, but I like to be realistic too. Better safe then sorry.

What do you think? Honestly.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My girlfriend held onto her daughters id & I keep mine on me when we go out. Thanks for the input!

That's cool that you took the time and made the ID cards. I would definately NOT give them to the kids. I've read stuff that says you shouldn't put their names on the outsides of their backpacks, or on their shirts, or anything, because it would give a potential "stranger" the ability to call them by name. It might trick the child into believing the person knows them or their parents. And it only takes a minute or two to steal a child.

Also, at 7 mos. and 2 yrs., they are way too young to hang onto them. You don't want them to land somewhere else, and get picked up.

So, for now, keep them with you guys -- or if you want to make duplicates, give a set to the grandparents.

You should hold on to them unless they have limited information on them.

I think that is a great idea. I would give the parents one and the kids one and extras to file away or give to other caregivers.

Hi T.,
I agree with most other posts...I think you should hold onto the cards. Also, we picked up Safety Kits at a fair. The local police were on hand. They took fingerprints of the kids and a swab of their DNA. We have that filed with all of our personal papers (passports, etc.)
Hope this helps.

Hi T., Yes I like your thinking! Better safe than sorry applies to many situations when raising kids.

Actually I like both of your ideas...can you make a copy , so that the child has one and you have one.? I noticed in walmart for only about 2 dollars you can a small kit of laminating paper, and copy machines are in grocery stores and libraries and don't cost much, so maybe it's feasible.
Good luck and stay safe.

I would keep one on you and put one in a lock box. Also, contact your local police station. Sometimes they will put them on file there as a just-in-case

I had these made for my son. I carry 1 in my wallet, 1 in my husband's wallet, and the 3rd went to the daycare. When I became a SAHM, I gave the other to my mom.
I was nervous about them falling into the "wrong" hands, but I figured that they are being kept with my driver's license and credit cards which are probably more interesting to a would be thief. Not to mention, all of the info on his ID card is on my DL besides his name and photo.

My nieces have ID cards. I don't remember if they got them through a school program or through the local police department, but they have 3 copies - one for their parents and one for each set of grandparents.

Personally, I would file it with the parents personal correspondence in a clearly labeled file folder.

Hi T.,

I would say the parent should keep it. If the girls carry them, they could accidently lose them then whoever finds it would have all their information. That might not be good depending on who would find it.

My daughter gets ID cards with her school pictures. I hold onto them in case something happens. With regards to one of our children wandering off at times, we put a business card in their pocket (either my husband's or a homemade one of mine) with the child's name and who to contact (including cell phone numbers) should someone find our child. This means that if our child wanders off a good samaritan can help them find their way back to us immediately (although I'm a paranoid mom and don't really let the 4 year old and 11 month old out of my site). Anyhow, that is how we deal with it. That way with regards to the id that has my daughte's pic on it, we have it to give to authorities if we need to.

Anyhow, hope this helps. Good luck with your little ones.

I have ID cards for everyone in my family including myself. If you have anything that has DNA on it you need to put it in the freezer. A great source for DNA is baby teeth. Place them in separate envelops but don't lick it, seal it with tape. If you keep them in the freezer then tell someone where they are it will be easy access in case of an emergency. I hope this helps.
