Hi all
On Saturday we had my BIL 40th birthday party - 80's Style!! I kid you not that this party has been 10 years in the making. It was a fabulous night. Everyone made such a great effort dressing up, the hall looked terrific.
Now the only problem. We got a respectable company to do the music. We gave them a playlist which took a lot of work to come up with. STRICTLY 80's only, which was confirmed by the big boss man. He has a lot of guys working for him and we were unlucky enough to get the idiot of the year. He walked in while we were doing last minute prep, did not introduce himself, just started setting up after being 20 minutes late. He then approached my BIL and said "Hey man do you mind if I mix it up a bit, 70's, 80's 90's music" UUHHH NO thats why we gave your boss a playlist and he confirmed he had all our requests. My BIL said no you cannot mix it up. Well he went ahead and mixed it up anyway!!
My sister, BIL and even some close friends went up and complained to him, he was such a D**K. Anyhoo it kind of put a damper on it, but no-one else apart from maybe 5 or 6 of us noticed. The birthday boy still had a great time. :-)
I think they should totally complain, only so this doesn't happen to anyone else. Maybe the DJ had some bad memories of the 80's or something? He never could complete his rubix cube or his atari stopped working or he just couldn't get those Thriller moves down! lol
I wanted to strangle him with my leg warmers!!!
My sis is kind of over it. She is so laid back. Unlike me who is still growling about it!! lol

UPDATE ANSWER: Are you using the royal "we"? If you paid for the DJ, then it's up to you and I think you should complain.
If you DID NOT PAY FOR IT - then it's a nunya problem.
I would complain! Even if sis is over it, if I helped plan the party, I would contact the company and complain that the guy was late, he played music you told him not to, and after being told to stop, he continued...and whatever else the little weenie did.

Call the boss on your own accord. Tell him that you were pleased with the service BOSS gave, but displeased with the actual service at the party. Let him know how many were in attendance and that many will likely want DJs in the future and that you/sis will NOT recommend his company if this loser still works there. Bosses love repeat customers and great references/feedback. If the boss was so nice I would think he'd be open to hear your feedback. I say give him a call. Start politely about telling him how pleased you were with his own personal service.
I would complain. You paid for a service, all he had to do was his job. If he was rude to your guests, then yeah he would be getting a complaint letter.
I would totally complain! That is not the what you signed up for and his boss should know. If I were the boss, I would want to know when my employees did something wrong so I could fix the problem. You really are doing a disservice if you don't complain- this doofus could mess up other parties and potentially cause the company to lose future clients. You also deserve some sort of compensation because you paid for a specific service and it was not delivered.
I would call and complain. You took the time to request a specific piece of the service and the DJ botched it. Even after he asked your permission, you said no, and he did it anyway. Total lack of 'Customer is always right'.
It doesn't matter what the DJ wanted to play. The customer request was very specific.The customer should be happy with the results. If the planning group were not happy, then that's a problem that should be reported. The owner may not even realize that this DJ did that.
His boss needs to know that the guy did it. I don't think he was the idiot of the year. I think he was the schmuck of the year. He likes what he likes and he was bound and determined to play what he wanted to play. And you all paid the price.
His boss needs to know that he is this kind of employee. So make the call. It is the RIGHT thing to do.

Of course you should complain or he'll do it to someone else. I complained about my rude waitress at a restaurant the other day and now I have 2 free entrees coming;)
That wasn't my intention but it's nice when they try to make up for the bad service.
You should complain and request a discount.
You asked for a very specific service and provided a play-list in advance. That specific service was not provided...and what was provided was done in a very rude way.
Make it clear to the "big boss man" that you know just how far and fast bad reviews spread. If he doesn't resolve the issue to your satisfaction, I'd hop on Angieslist and have each of your family members write a negative review there.
I would definitely complain so they have feedback on this employee.

Call on your own. The boss needs to know that one of his employees is not doing his job correctly. It reflects on the boss's company. You have every right as a guest to complain, especially since you were involved in the planning. Employees like that guy can cost the company customers through dissatisfaction, lack of referrals, complaints, etc. So you're doing the company a favor by letting them know that the employee didn't provide the service that the company hopes to provide.
Don't blame you!!!! He was PAID to follow your guidelines, period! I would definitely complain to the owner!
I agree with others that you should definitely speak up. Your party took too much planning for someone to go ahead and do what he wants. You're the customer, so he should have followed your instructions. You double and triple checked with the boss that the right music would be played, so the boss needs to make things right and speak to his employee and compensate you, maybe by giving a 50% discount because he was also late, which is unacceptable unless he is a high-in-demand celebrity (they're always fashionably late) or he makes up for it by staying an extra 20 minutes. You paid, so you are entitled to the services you requested; had it been free, it'd be another story.
You shouldn't have to bend over for the DJ and his choice of music, plus you might save someone else from having the same stubborn person ruining their party (by playing music with questionable lyrics to children at their party just because Mr. DJ likes those songs, for example).
Think of it this way: you order a filet mignon and pay $25 and the waiter decides to bring you a chewy, tough steak. Would you not complain that you didn't get what you asked for or what you paid for?
I would give an honest review on Yelp and wherever else you can leave feedback online. That will help the next group planning a party.
The DJ we had for our wedding almost 9 years ago was a douche too. My husband is Mexican so there was a lot of Mexican relatives at our party. They brought in their Mexican music and asked for it to be played - way later in the night. They told me the DJ would not play it for them. So I (the bride) went up to him to tell him to play the CD and he says back at me "I already played it" Which I never heard, so I'm not sure if he was right or not but beside the point. I said back at him "Well, PLAY it again" LOL Why argue with the bride? Anyway, he did a couple other things I only found out after the wedding. Being rude to guests, my mom and so on....
Funny thing is I actually ran into him the year before I was married at my friends party and he was kinda rude to me. I requested a song and he stated the bride and groom only want their music played. I accepted this, but found out later from my friend, that was untrue.
Ugh...anyway I never said anything but always regret I didn't. I'm not sure if he is still working for the company I used. But I told all my friends not to use him and request someone else.
If you think it could bother you 9 years later....lol...then I'd speak up. Even if you weren't the one directly in charge of paying the DJ. I'm over it, but am mad that I didn't at least write a complaint. Not that I wanted my money back, but he should not be a DJ.
I would call the company and tell the owner how badly this DJ did. Just because your other family didn't want to complain you still had a bad time. All that work was for nothing. I would be pissed and telling a whole lot about my experience to the owner.
I think I'm on a different page than everyone else on this. It was a party. Everyone had fun. Why sweat it??? Okay, if the boss calls and asks for your feedback, give it, but otherwise? Move on from this.
