I Just Need Some Advice

I have two daughters with very differnt personalites. My four year old is my main concern at this moment. Her father, my husband, was diagnosed with ADHD as a child and I am almost positive that my daughter has it as well. Everyday is a struggle with her. She is my princess, my baby(she's the oldest but my first:), I love her with every breath I have in me, but some days I don't know what to do next. She won't listen to anything that I say, can't follow directions unless I walk her through all of them and is absolutly exhausting. I don't know what to do. So far, she is in preschool and her school behavior is fine. I just would like a little advice on how to deal with a possibly ADHD 4 year old. Thank you, C.

What can I do next?

C., hi i know what your going through. my four year old boy has been doing the same thing. however in preschool they say that he sometimes is a little more hiper then the others and he has his bad days and good ones. i don't think you should worry about adhd right now,try some consistancy and less sugar. When having her do something, use small reguests at a time, and with time it will get better. I have noticed with my son that he will go to school everyday and take his coat off and bag and put them were they belong, however when he's at home he tends to want me to do everything for him. i'm not sure if this is whats going on with your daughter, but talk to her teachers. maybe she's trying to out smart you like my son is me. well good luck and let me know what happened. I'm not sure but does it seem to you that when you are helping your daughter do something, maybe she likes this because she has your full attention. i hope this helps you.

Hi C.!

It sounds like your having a tough time, and I feel for ya! I believe 100% that you should take your daughter to a specialist in ADHD, and they can test her for this. If it's all crazy for you, imagine what it's like for her. They may not even have to put her on meds, but if she does have it, then it's only fair to help her get it in check. If you leave it go untreated, it will only get worse and start causing problems for her, both emotionally and developmentally. I think you'd see a big difference in her behavior, otherwise the behavior that she can't control now, may turn into a learned behavior and you'll really have your hands full. Please keep us updated, and God Bless!

is that typical of a child with ADHD that her school behavior is fine but not at home? Would that indicate that it's not possibley ADHD and just a behavior issue at home?
I'm feeling for you. I hope you can find the help you need.
God Bless

Hello C.,

I have a 10 year old son with ADHD and I completely understand. It sounds like what my son went thru before he was in meds. Good at school for the most part but when at home a wild child. He was not on meds until 2 years ago and it has helped tremendously. His docor started him out on the lowest possiable doses of meds and if need be incresed them. Before the meds school steadily got worse. And now he is doing great. He has all B's and his behavior is 100 times better. I sudgest that you have the doctor test her and go from there. Im not saying she needs meds right now but at least he can monitor her, for if and or when the time comes for meds. He can be sure.

Hi C.,
I am sorry you are going through a hard time. I have a 4 yaer old little boy who has more energy than I know what to do with. I have some experience with ADHD as my sister(who's 10 years younger than I) has had it since she was very very young. I would get your daughter tested just to see if that's what she really has. That way, you will know. As for meds, I know parents are scared to death of some of the ADHD meds out there. It seems we here alot of the negative, not the positive. My sister is a completely different person when on her meds and it only makes her life better. It is odd however that your daughter doesn't have these problems at school, unless of course she stays busy all day. I would have her tested, though. Hang in there. Somedays I go crazy with just 1 little one, let alone 2. Let me know if you have ANY questions that I can help with.

Hi C., I have a 4 year old daughter too. I totally understand what you mean. we have the same issues and most days by the end I am so tired I want to cry. I would not be too quick to say she has ADHD, she might, but she is 4 and I think that it is typical for them to be exhausting. I am not sure I really have any advice for you, because I have the same issues. But I wanted you to know that you are not alone in the exhaust of raising a 4 year old girl. This is the time that they start really exertng their independance and testing their boundaries. maybe ask her teacher what her favorite things are to do at school and try them at home too. I find that I can't entertain her enough, and when she comes home from school she is so tired because they are busy all day. it could be that she is bored at home and is acting out because of it. I hope maybe I helped a little bit. I know it is hard, if you need to talk you can email me, Good Luck, A.

I can suggest talking with your girls peditrian and seeing if there is any medication that your daughter can be on at this point in her life. Just to let you know I was diagnosed with ADD as a 7 or 8 year old. I now what it is like to have ADD but not ADHD. As a child I was put on Ritalin for my ADD which helped me out. If I can help any further please let me know.

I so know what your feeling my oldest at the age of 3 found out she was bipolar and adhd then later to find out my youngest at 4 was the same way but now finding more wrong then just that . It is very stressfull and can make one tired. Do take her in and have her checked there is wonderful meds that will help. And with the being fine in preschool and not at home its not a behavior thing . Theres more things to do at school and they are being challenged. I hope this helps and if i can help in anyway just let me know and good luck

My best friend Marjie had the same problem with her son. She didn't know what to do so she went to a specialist to see if they could get a diagnosis. They started seeing a therapist and so far his behavior has gotten better. And he hasn't had to take any medication yet either. That might be an option for you.
