I still can't believe the letter I received last friday. My two year old's pediatricians office sent me a letter that states that the immunizations that he received MAY NOT have been effective due to refrigeration problems and that he needs to have these vaccines repeated...... If anyone can give me some advice on this bizzar situation I would really appreciate it. Don't some of the immunizations have to be done at a certain age to even be effective? What health risks are there to my son to receive these vaccines a second time? I just saw a program on Oprah about Autism, is there a link between vaccinations and Autism? I am so worried, scared, upset about this situation that I can't even beleive this is happening. I of course feel that my kids need to have vaccinations but to have them done a second time? I know I probably won't find anyone on mamasource that has had this weird situation happen to them but any support on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

What can I do next?

This same thing happened to me too. I believe it was my daughter that was suppose to go back and get more immunizations. I never went and had them redone. I haven't had any problems with her having to repeat them for school. I thought they told me they would have to write a note indicating the issue, but to this day they have not. I did not want her to repeat them due to dangers of autism and other things. There was another segment on Good Morning America this morning about the link between immunizations and autism.

First of all I would find out more information. How many of the immunizations need to be repeated? Are they going to cover the cost? Are there any risks? Immunizations are dead or weakened viruses but they are to be kept refrigerated to keep them effective. More then likely if he didn't have any problems when he received the immunizations the first time he won't react to them now. There are recommended times for immunizations to be given; however, they can be given at any time (some of the have to be repeated 2-3 times for a complete series. For example the Hepatitis A vaccine: We never got it when we were kids unless we were going to be leaving the country or something...but now they are scheduling it with other childhood vaccines more for convenience then anything else. But an adult who is going to be traveling may need to go receive the vaccine according to the CDC recommendations. It doens't make a difference at what age is it given as long as it is given properly. Another option you have is to get titers drawn to see if certain vaccines were effective. Ask your doctor if you trust him about these things or another doctor for a second opinion. I hope this helps and good luck with your situation.

There was a report that came out about amonth ago that said that research says there is no link between autism and immunization, but there are mom's out there who are adament that they saw the fog go over their child's eyes at the time of the shot. It is so hard to know who to believe! I say thought that the risk of autism isn't worth the risk of no imms. so, if you trust your doc, follow his advice! Best wishes!

Immunizations aren't given at special times as much for their effectiveness as for their convienance. If your child is to old for a particular shot it is because the child no longer requires it. The child has surpassed the time when getting the illness would be harmful and so that immunization wouldn't be necessary. I have never kept with the schedule suggested for immunizations because we have children in our family with autism. We slow down the immunization schedule and non have my children have been harmed. You must live in my area because we have had the exact situation here. Talk to your doctor and decide what makes you most comfortable.

ugh! That would concern me too. It depends who you ask those questions to as to what response you are going to get. If you ask a mom with a child with autism (I personally know 3 moms) she will say it was the immunizations. If you ask the drug companies they will say they are cheap, safe and effective. It is a hard decision to make and a hard one to stick to unless you are very firm in your beliefs and knowledgable in this area. I would suggest you talk to people who are not benefiting financially from giving your child an immunization and see what they say :)

There is no link to autism and vaccinations. There is no reported evidence, research, reports, or anything else that might link autism to vaccinations. The ingredient that was in vaccinations that was thought to be the offender was taken out of the vaccinations more than ten years ago. This information comes straight from my biopsychology teacher, Dr. Steve Lazarre. As far as the dates of vaccinations go, your doctor will only give your child a shot that will help him, not something that is too late to be effective. If you are worried about health risks, then call your doctor. Ask him what the expected side effects to recieving a second round of vaccinations will be. Your doctor will not do anything to put your child in harms way, and if you feel he will then you need to change doctors. You can also call another doctor for a second opinion. This is what they are there for, to inform you to make the best choices for your child. Besides, if you think about it, do you think that the office would inform you that they might need to be repeated if it wasn't going to work or if it was going to harm your child? If you answer this question yes then you might want to start looking into a different doctor. Hope this helps.

I think the thing with immunizations and autism is that there used to be mercury in the vaccines to help preserve them. I don't think they do that anymore, but you can ask your doctor about it and even ask for proof that it isn't in the vaccines anymore. But I don't blame you for being scared. Hope all works for you.

I agree with the person that said to get his immunity tested for the ones that need to be redone. The test is called a titers test for whatever the vaccine is. If you are looking at a whole series of shots it may be more worth one blood draw than a whole bunch of pokes for the poor kiddo. Good luck.

If one study proves it there is always another that proves it doesn't. My son has autism but since his half-brother through his father has it I am going with the fact that it was inheritated. I know that the school are really picky about a certain vaccination before 1 year of age. They don't even want the child to get it on the day that he turns 1! So they encourage the parents to bring them in a few days after the birthday. I don't think vaccinating the child again would really hurt. I know that we missed my son's 15 month appointment, thinking we went from 12 months to 18 months. So he had to get caught up. He got several vaccinations all within a few weeks. But I'm not positive up getting the same vaccine twice. There are lots of people that don't know what vaccines that got as children and so they get them as adults. I can't see that it is hurting them.

Well they did extensive research about the correlation between Autism and vaccines. Well I've read tons of studies on it BEFORE I had children. It was for school. Anyways, it wasn't conclusive but then again what happens is one study says yea there is a problem... then someone does the study again and says no, can‘t find one.. and this process continues! Sometimes for ages! LOL!! Anyways, cause some of the studies said yes alot of the vaccines.. ok all that I've read about.. were reformulated. I believe it was the Mercury, Lead and such they concluded might be the problem. So they removed those. I know this doesn’t help you much but thought I might share what I learned with you. And supposedly since the reformulation the test have been more conclusive on the negative side.

Is it all of his immunizations since birth? It sounds very bizarre, you would think since they are dead or weakened viruses it would not matter if they had been refrigerated properly. Are they giving the replacement shots for free? I would at least wait a few years if he needs to be given all of them since birth & space them out. I have always worried about vaccinations anyways & if I had to do it again I would wait until my children were 2 b4 starting any of them & slowly spacing them out.

I only know that shots are supposed to be given at certain ages but my youngest daughter was so sick when she was born to about four that she wasn't able to get hers on time. It did nothing to her to affect her differently than if they were given at the normal time. I don't know about if you have to double dose what happens. When I have bizzare things happen to me (which is alot) I look things up on WebMD.com Hopefully you can get some answers to your questions there.

Hey L.! I just received the same letter in Ames. My husband and his family are kind of against immunizations so we decided not to get them done again. Our daughter has never been sick in the 3 years, so we think she'll be just fine. Let me know what you decide...since we are both in Ames!

I have a friend with twins, and the nurse was not paying attention while giving the immunization, and gave 1 of the babies 2 of the same immunizations. We did a lot of research to see what may happen, and it is unclear. There is not a scientific link between autism and imunizations, yet there has obviously been speculation that it exists. I think you are doing the best thing by asking questions. I would also suggest calling a different pediatrician and asking them advice or a "second opinion". Immunizations were created for a reason, and the chance that you child may be exposed and contract a disease that could have been prevented from the immunization is a chance that you would have to take if your child does not get a second set. Another option is to see if they can check titers before giving a second set. This would check to see if your child has created antibiodies to those particular diseases. I don't know if they can do it on a child this young, but it is an option. Good luck.

Get on the internet and find a vaccine web site --do some research on your own--then go talk in a pharmacist--I have found the best are at Walgreens and Medicap--they are trained to dispense and to advise on the use of drugs--Good Luck and do not delay.I would also advise you to find a different Doctor.
