How to Make a Smoothie and What to Put It In

Hello,
At a recent visit to my daughters (13 months) doctor regarding her chronic constipation the doctor recommended smoothies to increase her intake of fruits (1 cup of either fruit, vegetables or a combo) and insure she was getting enough dairy (the doctor said 12oz total of milk and/or yogurt). I was going to start making smoothies for her in the morning but I'm not sure how to make one. My other question has to do with the sippy cups. Which one will work for smoothes with seeded fruit? My friend said that seeds from strawberries, etc often get stuck in her children’s sippy cups, so she buys the store bought smoothies. I would like to make fresh ones while the fruit is so good right now. Any ideas?

I make green smoothies for my boys all the time (you need a good blender if you're going to do often)...

Blend raw spinach (I fill the whole blender lightly), water, 1-2 VERY RIPE bananas.. blend until smooth and liquid

Then I add froze fruit
pineapple (probably too strong for a 13 mos old)
mango
peaches
strawberries

It's a great way to get in a lot of green veggies, and fruit

You can add yogurt, probiotics.

I personally avoid adding juice... empty calories... all that fruit and greens are fiber... My kids have the healthiest poops you've ever seen... hard to beleive they come out of such little people!

Edited to say that I use sippy cups without the little plugs... everything generally goes through nicely...

I too just started making smoothies for my son who does not consume very much protein. I add a large teaspoon of vanilla protein powder (from Raleys bulk area) to the blender and it's great. I am not sure on amounts, but to my blender I add about half of a large glass of ice, 1 1/3 cups of frozen Triple Berry Mix which consists of Raspberries, Blueberries, and Marionberries. I get it at Costco (it's a Kirkland brand, so only sold there). Then I add two containers of any flavor yogurt. Lemon is great. I add two bananas, but for your daughter I'd omit the banana, since banana binds. I'd stay with the "p" fruits and veggies (pears, peaches, plums, etc.) to help relieve the constipation if you wanted to add another fresh whole fruit. You may want to add some pear or peach juice to help "thin out" the mixture. Regarding the cup, I'd agree that the seeds would probably get caught in the sippy cup. Have you thought of using a plasic cup and lid that you get with the "kids' meal" at a restaurant (like Spaghetti Factory, Olive Garden, etc)? Keep the cup and lid from the meal and then use it with straws you can get at a fast food restaurant. I don't mean to sound cheap, but you can get really great wide straws at Jack in the Box. I have not found wide straws for sale in stores.

Don't know about the sippie cup but I was thinking that maybe one of the cups that has a straw attached?

Smoothies are simple... don't make too much of it. Freeze some of the fruits. Bananas make a great base fruit if your child isn't allergic. You can freeze just about any fruits though. Combine those with the yogurt, which will also give her the beneficial bacteria. Stay away from the store brands which usually have high fructose corn syrup in them.

The other suggestion is that she needs to drink water.If she is not getting enough water the body will reabsorb it from the fecal matter which will result in constipation.
