How to Handle Working and Having a Toddler

Hello moms, I am having to go back to work and am having a tough time figuring out the logistics. I am finding that the jobs in my profession require about an hour commute, often 9-6pm workday so then 8-7pm including the commute. And most preschools seem to close at 6pm. I am wondering how other working moms do it, if you have no family to pick them up early? Do you hire a nanny instead? My son is almost three, so transitioning him in preschool would be good. Also, I am having trouble finding part time jobs as opposed to full time in my profession, and am having trouble in interviews because I took three years off to be a SAHM. Any advice or stories to share? I need help being creative to plan around these challenges. Thanks!

Take him to a preschool or day care closer to work. It also will allow you to drive the carpool lane to and from work, thus shortening your commute. Good luck.

I like having my kids being cared for close to where I work. That way I can be there for field trips, illnesses or whatever. It is also a huge benefit to have all that quality time together during the 45 minute commute each way.

You should find a preschool near where you work so the two of you can commute together and he will be close by in case something happens.

Does your profession allow flex time options?
Could you come in earlier and leave earlier? 9-6 seems like a flex time workday. what about 8-5? or 8-4:30?
You are showing a 9 hour day... I'm guessing that includes an hour lunch - you could drop that to a half hour.
Daycare close to your work would also be beneficial to you - if you can have that as an available option.
Can someone else pick up? Husband, close friend, relative?

You can always spin the time off so it looks good. I loved doing this so much, that when I decided to rejoin the work force... I want to keep doing what I was doing!

These ladies have great suggestions.
I have my kids in preschool a few days a week and I have a lady who comes to my house (Guess you'd call her a nanny) in between. She actually started helping me when they were little so I know her really well so she actually picks them up from preschool and brings them home.
In regards to the job market I have no idea what you do. The good news (I believe) is that companies are coming out of a rough time and are doing more hiring now. Part-time work -to start- is attractive for many parties to make sure that the 'fit' is right for everyone involved. Best of luck in your search! I hope it works out.

My commute isn't as long so I can usually drop off and pick up my son, but on days where I have to work late, my husband picks him up. I know of several couples where one spouse drops the kids off and the other one picks them up.
