I have a one year old daughter who is starting to throw temper tantrums. She will do this whenever I leave the room, if im on the phone or pretty much doing anything that doesn't involve her. She will throw herself on the ground and cry...for hours! I've tried ignoring her but after an hour or two of screaming it's really hard to do. I've also tried putting her in her crib and shutting the door but she will continue on until she makes herself sick. My husband gets so frustrated he just tells me to pick her just to make her stop...and then of course tells me that im spoiling her. I have a two year old son that also needs my attention but I feel like im always putting him on hold to calm her down. Does anyone have any advice? My son never had these tantrums so it's all new to me so any help would be appreciated!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I wanted to thank everyone for their responses....it helps just knowing that there are other people dealing with the same situation. I will try your suggestions and let you know how it goes. It's just hard to put a 12 month old in time out...do you think she can understand something like that so young? I expected tantrums but not at such a young age.

I don't have any advice, sorry, but I do have a set of 2 yr old twin grandchildren that I have custody of.... Corbin and Mackenzie, and I am right there with you! She throws tamtrums that I have never seen before, but Corbin does not. I am begging for advice as well. Her tantrums are because I don't pick her up every time she wants me too. She also does not let anyone else pick her up except my husband and he is out of town a couple to three days a week.

It kind of sounds like she might have an attachment disorder or maybe she's just a little needier than your son was. Withdrawing your attention and letting her cry isn't working so I suggest you try the opposite for a while. She's really too young to be spoiled and manipulative.

If she cries for you then she probably just needs tons of affection and attention. Try over doing the hugs, kisses and kind words for a while and see what happens. Can you carry her around in a sling on your hip until she's tired of it and wants down? Read books and cuddle with her until she can't stand it anymore and wants to go play.

I, too, have talked to my daughter's(she is 15months) ped. about tantrums, and her response to me is..."put her in a safe place where she can't harm herself in the tantrum and let her have at it..." she then proceeds to tell me that once she calms down to go over and talk to her about her emotions and what is going on. I feel like this is something you probably have tried, and you are pressured at home to just give in, but then you are told you are spoiling her possibly at the same time. sounds torn to me. i would say, try waiting for as long as completely possible without giving in. at the first sign of her calming, you calmly walk over and talk to her and give her loves. they always say to praise your child lots when they are behaving the way you expect, and i have noticed that it does work for me. i am also a believer in the whole "healthy mom, healthy baby" attitude which could be translated in this situation to "calm mom, calm baby" i guess i am saying that if you go in to her world, her tantrum, flustered and a bit uneasy, i believe children can sense that, and in turn she is even more flustered and uneasy....i hope that was some help or a bit reassuring to you, and also, i really like babyzone.com, they send newsletters, etc. about topics like this and other ones surrounding your child's age/development. i like to play around on that and get some tips as well.

Hi J.,

I am kinda going through the same thing however my son is 2 almost 3. He never really threw temper tantrums. Since I have a daycare in my home though he has seen a couple other children throw temper tantrums and now he is starting. I have a chair that has the word "Time Out" on it. When he throws a temper tantrum right now I gently walk him over to the chair and put him in it and tell him that he can't get up until the timer goes off. (1 min for ea. year of his age. = 2 min) If he gets up I tell keep putting him back and back .... yea I know it can get old after awhile, but once he knows that if he gets up and he is going to be put right back in the chair after a couple times he sits there. The main thing that I have learned as being a parent and a child care provider... if you say you're going to do something.. stick to it! I hope this helps. Good Luck.
