"How To:" Cooking Classes?

I have some expertise and talent that I would like to be able to share with others and add a bit to our household budget. I grew up in Amish country and have cooked my whole life. Friends are always telling me I should teach cooking classes and I get calls all the time asking how to do things. I am thinking about hosting some small (5 max) groups in my home and teaching some of the fundemental skills of the lost art of scratch cooking. You know, hands-on with tips and techniques that don't come along with recipes in cook books. Then we could end the evening with a meal to enjoy the fruits of our labors. It could be fun making new friends while learning basic skills that are actually USEFUL! To cover the costs and make it worth my time I would need to charge about $15 to $25 per person. More for example to do "How to Prepare Thanksgiving Dinner" than "How to Get the Most From a $3 Chicken". Other topics could be "How to Make Jams & Jellies", "Canning 101", "How to Decorate a Cake", "What to do with Hamburger -Again!" "Easy, Impressive Deserts", etc.

What do you think? Sound fun, but wouldn't do it? Too expensive? Great idea? Also, are there any permits needed to do such a thing in your home? Truly, I have no idea where to start...help! I'm located in Corinth just off I-35 so access is easy.

What can I do next?

LOVE the idea and think your $25 fee is very reasonable. Good luck to you!

Wish you lived in Frisco. Sounds like fun and a good price. Markets that have demonstrations are expensive. Don't know about permits - would recommend calling Denton County Health Dept and see if they have rules. Keep us posted.

Denton County Health Dept. does not have jurisdiction over food handler permits, restaurants, food sales, etc. I'm not sure if you would need any kind of permit, but I would contact the sanitarian at your city of residence to inquire about this. Sounds like fun to me!! I would love to hear more about it when you're ready to begin!

Not only do I think its a great idea, I am thrilled that you live in Corinth like me:) I would love to get such training from a real mom that cooks for her family. And, I think that $25 is a very reasonable price, so I would not charge any less than that. I cant help you with permit information, but if you are going to do it, please keep me posted. So much fun!! ~A.~
