How Old Is Your Child??

This is probalby a VERY silly question, but I am a first time mom. When people ask you how old your child is, do you typically tell them in months or in weeks? So if my child was born on August 15, 2007 is he 41 weeks (10 months technically) or 9 months and 2 weeks based on counting whole months vs. individual weeks? When you schedule drs appts for 3-6-9 month appts what do you go off of and when you look at milestones for their age, what do you go off of? I've had mixed reviews on this. I know it all equals out in the end.

What can I do next?

The pediatrician sets appointments according to the day number that the baby was born...for example if you baby was born 10/15/07 then 11/15/07 he is 1 month...12/15/07 2 months etc. After 12 weeks or 3 months then you start going by months and the counting weeks...for example 3 1/2 months or 3 months and 3 weeks etc.

I apparently used to count in months a little too long, apparently you should stop when people start laughing. I liked the months until 36 months became 3 years. Good luck!

Hi J.,

I use months still.. My son is almost 20 months old so that's what I say..
I think once he turns 2, I'll start saying 2, little over 2, 2 1/2, etc...

There are officially no silly questions for first time moms. But you knew the answer before you asked: it all evens out in the end. I still use months for my daughter (21 mos.) but my oldest is 5, and for at least the first 2 years, I could break his age down in years, months and weeks.

Now I'm lucky if I call him by the right name!

Good luck! (to both of us, apparently...)

I am chuckling because I had this very debate with my husband only when I was pregnant and we "argued" about how many months pregnant I was...was I 9 or 10 months???

So your baby was born on August 15, 2007. On September 15, 2007, he would be ONE month old...on October 15, 2007 he'd be TWO months old and so on. It's perfectly OK to count his age by weeks, if you choose. Personally, I don't see a problem with telling someone that my baby is 5 weeks and 4 days old. At no other time in our lives are we proud to announce that we are weeks old so enjoy this opportunity. I think most parents stop calculating the weeks sooner than later and simply say, "He is 4 1/2 months old." It's your choice, what feels right to you.

We did pretty much the same as Janet S. Of course, now sometimes my son is 2, sometimes he's 2 1/2, and sometimes he's "almost 3" depending on my mood. ;)

that is a confusing thing for doctors appointments. you spend nine months telling the exact amount of days to schedule for the right appointment and then they act like your weird if you do that once the child is born. I think then, they want you to say in months more or less. I'm on child number three and it still gets on my nerves. My daughter has the birthday you used as an example. Is that your child's birthday? Weird.

J.,

As a mom to 3 boys, I have found that it has just been easier to use the month method. It gets to confusing trying to remember how many weeks old once you have gotten past the 12 week mark.

Good luck.

I did months with my daughter until she was about a year and half and then switched to years. Although her doctors office still goes by months until she is three which will be in August, I think it is easier for the rest of the world to comprehend months.

When the baby is first born you go by weeks. After about three months you start to go by months. When the baby reaches two you start to go by years. At least this is how I did it.

I personally do NOT think it is silly............anyhow. I go by months, by his birthday so every 5th day of the month my son is getting older.
