How Long Should a Fever Last?

I will be calling the doctor in the morning, but I am curious now. How long do fevers typically last?

Tuesday evening my 4yr old was in major melt down mode. When asked if he was feeling okay, he said yes, so we assumed he was really tired (he hadn't been wanting to go to sleep the previous few nights.) That night when putting him to bed, I noticed a low grade fever. Wednesday he still had a low grade fever, as well as a little bit of a cough, and as he gave no complaints, we thought it was probably an upper respiratory virus. Thursday was much the same. We began to suspect that his throat hurt, but he said it didn't. Friday he still had a low grade fever. I took him to the doctor and it turns out that his tonsils were BRIGHT RED and really inflamed. He tested positive for strep and is now on Amoxicillin. He also started having a little bit of diarrhea (before starting the antibiotic.) It is now Sunday afternoon and he STILL has a low grade fever, a sore throat, and minor diarrhea. Any ideas about what is going on?

Thanks!

So What Happened?

It was suspected that he had a virus in addition to the strep throat. That was confirmed the other day when he broke out in a rash with red cheeks, which signals the final stage of Fifths Disease. We have found out that this was going around his daycare. So, he was one sick little boy.

Hello, it depends on the infection, the intensity or degree of inoculation, your immune status and overall state of health. Typically, the infection and fever will be treated with medicine to reduce the fever like Acetaminophen or an antibiotic. You should see the fever resolve with a few days. If it persists, see your doctor for another evaluation.

If it's strep, he's going to have several days of this garbage. Then he'll have more because a fever is a body's way of showing it's fighting an infection. Prayers for a quick recovery :)

Well amoxicillin can take a few days to start helping. He started them Friday it's only been two days. I'd give it 3-4 days after starting the amoxicillan.

You have to give the medicine some time to work. It's only been a few days. I think our doctor's rule of thumb is 4 days. If he's not better by Tuesday, I would call and ask them what they think.

The amox can cause the diarrhea, so my guess would be it's a side effect of the meds. Give him some probiotics while he's on the amox. That will help to keep his digestive system regulated. The fever isn't a terrible concern. That's how is body is fighting off the virus. If it spikes or he starts vomiting, then it's cause for concern.

Good luck!

The fever should have broke after being on the antibiotic 24 hours. I had strep once where the fever didn't break and my strep got worst. Found out that the strep bacteria was resistant to the antibiotic. Call the doctor and he will call in another prescription for your son to try.

Low grade fever is a good sign that his body is still fighting something. Perhaps a virus on top of the bacterial strep throat.
ie - Strep throat is bacterial. Antibiotics will fight it.
Virus is viral. The body just needs time to fight it, therefore the fever.

When my 3 yr old has a low grade fever, we don't give him ibuprofen to bring it down. We just let the body fight it. When it gets to 101 we give him ibuprofen, as it's not safe for his body to get that hot. I wouldn't worry or lose any sleep. Just call the dr tomorrow and ask what they think.

Im sorry he feels bad! Strep can take a long time to get rid of. For my daughter, it takes the whole course of the antibiotic to get rid of it. Plus, my daughter has loose bowels just about everytime she gets strep. Keep him hydrated and tylenol and/or motrin until it passes. You are doing a great job!
