How Important/necessary Are Bottles at 11 Months?

My son could care less of he drinks his bottle anymore (except at bedtime). He drinks TONS of water and definately stays hydrated thru that means as well as his formula in his breakfast. But he does not like to sit and drink a bottle.

Is this common and normal for this age? Do i need to be concerned and force more milk down him?

He gets approximately 12 oz tops of formula/milk all day.

Thanks for any input

R.,

Ditch the bottle all together, even at bedtime. Give him milk with each meal and offer water the rest of the day. He should be getting most of his nutrition from food at his age. Kids get attached to bottles if they still have them past one year. Since he is already indifferent about it just go with it!

Best Wishes!

Hi R.,
I would get rid of the bottle all together and just use sippy cups. You should be switching to whole milk at his first B-day if you haven't already. He does need the fat and calcium he will get from whole milk for the next year for his brain development but doesn't need more than about 2 cups a day. Now is also the time to eliminate milk at bedtime to protect his teeth. Make sure you are brushing his teeth VERY well before bed, even if you have to hold him down, and give him only water afterwards. It may be a battle at first but don't give in. Early childhood caries is on the rise in the U.S. and having milk sit on the teeth all night is really bad. Email me if you have questions.
Sincerely,
L.

I am pretty sure the minimum ounces of formula for an 11 month old is 24 ounces or more. Formula should be the primary source of nutriton until age 1. I know when he turns one you can switch to whole milk and then the minimum is around 12-16 ounces.

By the time we went to our one year check up, the doctor said milk only 2-3 times daily...no more than 16-20 ounces. If you are worried about the actual milk, like calcium intake or something, try yogurt and cheese. My son especially loves yogurt. He can more in one sitting than any adult Iknow :-) I don't think you have anything to worry about, and be glad about the water. My son also love shis water, but I have friends who spend a whole day trying to get one glass of water into their children.

I am not sure of your baby bottle brand but you can switch to a sippee top instead of bottle nipple. I know that the Avent brand has sippee tops that you can use instead of the nipple that fit on the Avent bottle. Don't push the bottle- some kids never like the nipple. My girlfriend has 2 kids that hated the bottle and they just sipped from the rim of the cup- even at 4 months or so.

Try giving him a cup. Either a sippy cup or just a regular real cup (plastic of course).

I agree with the other two moms, I just wanted to add that you should be happy it was an easy transition. I know mom's who battle the bottle (baby bottle that is) until their kids are 3 or 4!
