How Do You Store Your Christmas Books?

Hi moms! My kids have accumulated lots of Christmas books. It seems weird to keep them out year round with the other books, but what else do I do with them? Store them away with the Christmas decorations? What do you do? We also have some other holiday books - Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Easter - and I don't know what to do with them, either. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have a basket that sits out for holiday books when then holiday is in swing. Afterwards I pack them away with the other holiday decor. So Christmas books go w/the Christmas stuff and Easter w/the Easter stuff and Halloween, Thanksgiving etc. To me that's what makes them special is when you get them out at the season.

I keep them on my son's bookshelf with all of his other books year round. Too much of a hassle for me to sort out which ones need to be put up for which season.

I store mine in a "cupboard" on my bookshelves...I have a huge collection of Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Easter...etc. I rotate books every month according to the season or holiday (but I run a home daycare and have the space to do this!) If you like em, keep em w/ your regular books...I personally like the magic of getting them out every December! Christmas is my favorite time, so this makes it even more special! (I also have a collection of Christmas novels that I will only read in December...yes, every year, I reread my favorites! :)

We have a few Christmas stories that stay in with all the other books all year,(Charlie Brown Christmas" , "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", but also have some very nice books that only come out at Christmas time. Mostly for decoration, they are stored rest of the year with the decorations. I keep them in a sealed plastic bin with other framed art work that is Christmas themed. They are part of my decorating but we also read them every season. I have a very nice, fancy looking "Night Before Christmas" and "Nutcracker Suite". They are set out on the piano and not played with like some other books, but the kids grew up knowing they were special and always looked forward to having one of us read them. Theyve done fine in the bins for about 25 years now.

For the past 5 years, I've kept all our Christmas books in a huge heavy Christmas basket (the lining is Christmas material). I write the year its received on the back of each book, esp when we add new ones. I place the basket of books in a huge janitorial clear garbage bag, tie it up and tuck it into the corner of our closet. That way it stays out of the way, stays dust free, the collection stays together each year, and my kid doesn't see them until next Christmas, making them special b/c he hasn't seen them all year. We still have baby Christmas books he got when he was a baby and its so much fun to look through the collection from over the years, as well as adding new ones each year.

I keep them out year round. There are some, however, that are nicer pop up ones that I put on a shelf in closet. We can get them down, but they are just not easy access.
If you find your bookshelf full, however, I'd pack 'em up with the fall decorations so you have time to enjoy prior to holiday. I say that because I found an advent calendar in my Christmas decorations one year and it was already 12 days into to the month . . . .oh well.

Can you find space on your bookshelf for them? Sometimes you want the books before you get out the decor. I know not everybody has the bookshelf space that I do (I'm a bookaholic), but I keep the holiday books for the grandchildren - and for me - on part of one shelf, a bit out of the way of the books we use year round.

We store the seasonal books on the top shelf of the book shelf. You never know when someone's going to host a Christmas in July type of thing (and my family is weird, we mix it up often), so we keep them close enough on hand where we can get to them throughout the year if need be.

When the kids were babies and toddlers Santa would bring a new book everyday of December for them to unwrap. That was easy and not that expensive when I could buy them through scholastic in the book packs that you can get around the holidays. However now that they are into much larger chapter books at $6-$15 a piece it adds up quick! This year Santa stole back all of their little kid Christmas books and wrapped them back up too. So each day they either unwrapped an old book or were surprised with a new book. It let them connect with the innocence of past Christmas' and also hold with tradition. I have 2 boys (8 and 11). I have done anywhere from 24 new books to 48 new books every year. This year there was only 12 new ones and the rest were the old ones. Hope that helps!

With the decorations, but easily accessable since I pull them out before the decorations. Halloween books the same way and other holidays also.

Ours are around, but I try to put them at the back of the bookbox. The only one I store is the Elf on a Shelf... since it only shows up when our elf does.

I put Christmas books and DVDs away with decorations; they happen to be stored on a shelf in the kitchen cabinet, not even in a box. They are easy to get to if we happen to decide to have a "Christmas in July" day or something out of the ordinary like that. I also keep Halloween and Easter books put away with those decorations. The kids get so excited when we unpack the books/DVDs with the other decorations! :)

Why not store them with the other books? We keep our shelves very much the way the local library keeps theirs- we have similar topics and sometimes authors grouped together. This sure makes finding things easier for everyone, even the kids.

Besides storing them with decorations might ruin them. Books really need to be on shelves or they could warp or pages might get stuck if the temperature in the basement, attic, or garage where you keep stuff isn't temp controlled.

And if your kids are like ours, they love reading holiday books all year, even if they're out of season.

we store them away with the christmas decorations and bring them out on thanksgiving night. the same with all other holiday books. we read them during that holiday and then they get put away. we do the same with the holiday movies. just put them in a box so they stay safe and dry.
