Homeopathic Allergy Solutions for Toddler?

I took my little one to the doctor this morning (he's 1 1/2) suspecting allergies and the doctor did verify that he has allergies. She suggested Claritan (kid version) 1 tsp/day. I'm thinking of returning the Claritin I just purchased because I have read quite a few interesting side-effects like the kid constantly acting up in a "naughty" manner, trouble sleeping, nightmares. Then was thinking of purchasing Zyrtec, but then the comments about the crazy side effects were the same with the Claritin. I understand how meds affect each toddler differently, but it just doesn't sound right. I used to take Advair (or use once in a very great while) and it made me nausous and loopy like I was "high". I'm just suspecting that why do meds that help us breathe affect our brain? Anyways, does anyone have homeopathic solutions in dealing with toddler allergies they can share? I want to give my son raw honey, but doc doesn't suggest that for kids under 3. Raw local honey helped me greatly with my allergies - dont' need to take anything for them at all! I've heard of giving lots of Vit C, this stuff at the drug store that you rub on their nose, something called Sabadil (sp?). Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I wanted to wait a while before I wrote a "what happened". Since that time I bought a bottle of black elderberry extract (w/o the alcohol) and started with .6 ml in the AM, then increased to .6ml in the AM & PM and then now daily, just 1/2 tsp in the AM and that's it. This works! He still has a runny nose, but it's not really bad (were it was that I felt I had to have a kleenix box attached to me so I may catch the boogies running down constantly -- plus he's got 2-3 more teeth to come in), but he's not itching his eyes or miserable. I'll slowly decrease the amount I give him so his immune system can do what it needs to do since it has this boost. I don't plan to continue this in June, but will start again in the fall. Thanks for all the suggestions!

I would go to a homeopathic doctor and get the right doses for him. You can take the general Hylands, but you will have better results if you get a work up done by a homeopathic doctor. I am a chiropractor and have used homeopathy for 20 years. It is way better than drugs, with no side effects.

Read all these with an open mind and look deeper into vaccines, the safety and risk. In our time there were less vaccines administered to us but now its rediculous, US is such a clean country why are we always introduced with so many kinds of drugs and vaccines, I don't have allergies at all I always hear of seasonal allergies, just eat lots of fruits and veges preferbly organic and dont eat process foods and you will have no allergies, my husband used to eat more processed foods and he had allergies since I switched his diet his allergies gone completely.

Have thought that after vaccination that started his allergies in the first place? My daughter after her 6 months vaccination she had pretty bad face allergies. Then I stopped all the vaccines altogether and she was fine 7 months after when the body eliminated all the toxins in the vaccine. I have many articles regards to the safety of vaccines, look into it as well. Many has gone to homeopathic doctors to reverse the effects of vaccination, if you notice today why kids are having allergies left and right. I hate that my daughter had to be on antihistamines for a long time so I did my research and found that the vaccine caused it.

Read up more and look into it as well. I have expecting my second and this time am not vaccinating and see how she does. I have exclusively nursed my daughter for 2 years. They say if you nurse will lower the chances of allergies but it still happen to my daughter, and now the scary thing is that I hear so many kids are having allergies after vaccinations ever thought about that too?

We use Hyland's Allergy tablets for our kids. They even work for me!

There is a nasal swab application from Little Noses too. I haven't tried that yet.

Good luck!

The most sure-fire way to get a good homeopathic remedy is to take your son to a homeopath. But the remedies are safe and free of side effects if you want to try self-prescribing.

Educate yourself by googling "homeopathy for children," and add the specific symptoms you want to control. There are a few different remedies that can be helpful for allergic symptoms, and any remedies recommended for children won't have side effects (unless he's allergic to milk, because the little pellets are made from milk sugar).

Several websites will help you choose which remedy will probably work best, though it's sometimes neccessary to try two or three to get a good match for a particular person. The trick is to match the remedy as closely as possible to the symptoms. But since the remedies are only about $7 each, you're not out much if you have to try two or three.

Homeopathy works for about 8 out of 10 people, is inexpensive, and most common remedies are available over the counter at many health-food stores and pharmacies. They are easy to administer to a child, 1 or 2 pellets melt under the tongue take effect in minutes if they are going to work at all. If not, you can try a different remedy with possibly better results.

I personally use Histaminum Hydrochloricum for itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, and hives. Reliably stops my symptoms cold.

Good luck – I hope your find a solution that works for your little guy.

Hi S.,
I don't believe in medications for children unless absolutely necessary. Too many side effects and long term issues. I dealt with allergies for over 10 years and each year getting worse. I started on an optimal nutritional product after hearing many stories of others no longer suffering with allergies because their bodies were being nurished enough for their own bodies to fight off naturally. This nutrition has been around for 20 plus years, patented by the US Govt., no warning labels and safe for babies in the womb to my Grandma in the nursing home. It has been 4 years and no allergies. All 3 of my children use this as well :)
So there are things out there to use that do not have to come from the pharmacy. I believe more and more doctors are seeing the benefits of good nutrition, thankfully, even though they have not been trained that way.
Hope you find something that works for your little one. You can email me if you want more information about the nutrition.

I'm not a believer in homeopathic remedies, so I can't help you there. I will tell you, however, that daily Zyrtec in spring and fall helped my toddler immensely with his allergies, and it had no side effects that we could tell. My older son has been taking Advair for years to keep his asthma under control, and again, no side effects. So it's not inevitable that allergy meds will affect your son other than to get his allergies under control.

I'm so glad to have seen your post!

I'm on Loratadine (Claritin) and my son is on generic Zyrtec. After reading your question and some of the responses, I google the side effects on both and was HORRIFIED to see all the responses stating major mood and anger issues! My son has DEFINITELY shown increased aggression, frustration and inability to deal with things since being on Zyrtec and I've also realized I've been dealing with a major downturn in my own moods that may be the result of my medication. How depressing to find this out! Yet I'm so glad to be aware of it!

I'm going to take both my son and myself off of our meds for at least 2 weeks to see what changes occur. Luckily, my son is almost 5, so I can try the raw honey solution. Also, there is a natural foods store in my town that carries some homoepathic "medicines", so I can check things out there.

I have used Hylands teething tablets and was fairly happy with how they worked, so I hope the Hylands allergy medicine that another mother posted will be available to try at my local store.

Good luck to you, and thank you again for your question which brought all of this to my attention!

Just finished answering something similar so here's what I said:

"Elderberry extract is simply food. It is wonderful for allergies in a little one as it boosts the immune system. You can get it in liquid form and it tastes great. (I always told my kids it was what Mary Poppins gave Jane and Michael) Echinacea is good too but in order for it to be effective you must remove all sugars (even simple carbs) from her diet. As she gets older, local honey will help with seasonal allergies too."

Hope this helps you as well!

First Raw honey is very toxic for a child under the age 3 as their body can not process it until they are much older. First what type of symptoms does your child have, itchy eyes, runny nose etc?? My oldest son has the same thing and we did have him on allergy medicine for awhile and then I quit when I read an article about letting the body create it own immunity against allergies and germs. While yes it was a bit uncomfortable for him for a little and we had to keep a look out for secondary infections from the allergies but by the time he was 4 he no longer had any signs of allergies and still doesn't to this day. Will this work for everybody... don't know. But if his symptoms are bad enough for your physician to recommend allergy medicine it could be something you might want to look into. BTW... if you look at the side effects of tynenol or aspirin you wouldn't take the either. All medications have side effects you just have to weigh the good and bad. If you do try homopathic method besure to look at the age that are recommended as with medications they can be toxic if given at too young of age. Good Luck!

I am very hesitant to give my child regular doses of any medication, for concern over short-term and long-term side effects. I'm all for exploring other options before medicating a child.

Raw honey: read more about it. This article says it's most dangerous for children under 1 yr due to botulism( http://www.drgreene.com/qa/honey-and-infant-botulism) NOT because it's inherently toxic.

One solution that is very risk-free is to help your child do nasal irrigations (neti pot): http://www.walgreens.com/store/catalog/Cough-and-Cold/SIN...:

Beyond that, I'd suggest meeting with a pediatric allergy specialist for other options.

If there were a valid homeopathic option, there would be no need to the prescription products (or the over the counter versions you mention). There are often no clinical trials associated with homeopathic treatments, so the safety is not documented, nor the effectiveness.

The FDA requires that any side effect occurring in more than 2% of the patients in clinical trials or reported once the product is available on the market to be listed publicly.

We've all had reactions to medications, sometimes we don't put 2 and 2 together. I had a bad reaction to Vioxx, and it was only months later that I realized it was my body reacting to it. But, I'd put up with the diarrhea and continue taking it for my arthritis if it were still on the market.

Not being involved in the allergy/respiratory space, I can't comment on how they work scientifically, but I would recommend taking them (I'd recommend the generic versions currently with the brand name recall from McNeil pharmaceuticals) and seeing how your child reacts after a few days. Our 2 year old has developed allergies this year, and I'd honestly prefer to give her a medication that is monitored by the FDA and has a system of reporting side effects vs. something with limited data and no safety system in the event of an adverse effect to the treatment.

Good luck.
