Helping Baby Sit Up?

I know I'm supposed to help my baby (almost 6 mos) learn to sit up by helping him develop stabilizing muscles. I've tried letting him sit in the boppy but he scoots down until he is flat! I am currently propping him against me but he does the same thing, or he will slump forward. Do you hold him up while he sits on his own? I'm not really sure how to best help him. He loves to stand but his legs are plenty strong, he needs to develop his core more. What do y'all think?

What can I do next?

I would suggest doing what my son's former PT calls baby in a box. You but the baby in a lanudry basket or a box that is similar to a file box (obliviously no lid) and teach him how to hold onto the sides with his hands. Dont use a bumbo for more than a few min a day max because its doesn't help them sit

i think relax lol. he will sit up when he's ready, don't worry! you don't have to put him through baby boot camp to ensure his core muscles are toned ;) i don't remember ever consciously "working" my son's core by helping him sit up. just love him, play with him, be active, help him "dance", give him lots of tummy time (yes, this does work the abs!). he'll get it, when he's ready, just love and enjoy him for now!

You won't have to worry about helping him develop his core muscles; everything he is doing does this! :)
I will say that there has been a recall on the bumbo- it was shown to be unstable and many babies were put in it before they were ready, which damages their spines and actually hurts their muscles more.
Just giving your baby tummy time and letting him move and wiggle around on his own is best.
He can strengthen his little boy muscles safely and naturally that way! :)

My son didn't like the bumbo. So I bought one of those "steering wheel" toys that made noise. He loved it and would grab onto the steering wheel to stabilize himself. I sat behind him (but not touching him) just in case he fell, then I could catch him and help him back up. After a couple of weeks of this, he was holding himself up without me needing to be there, and a few weeks after that didn't need to hold on to anything to sit.

My son is almost 6 months and doesn't sit up either. My daughter sat up at 3 months. They just develop at different rates. Ask your ped if you are worried, but other than that, love, food and tummy time!

Maybe try more tummy time. This helps build the core and the back muscles. However, they do everything in their own time.

Good Luck.

I was told by my our pediatrician when my son was that small that a good way to develop that skill and baby's muscles was to lay him on his back, grab his arms and slowly and gently pull him up into a sitting position, hold there for a little bit, then very gently lower him back down. You can put a pillow behind him, but make sure his head is the only thing that hits the pillow.
My son thought it was funny and would giggle while we did it. Also, whenever he sat with me, I held him up in a sitting position instead of letting him lean on me.
Good Luck!

If your baby is crawling well, he will sit up when he is strong enough. I cannot emphasize the importance of tummy time. Your baby can even sleep on his tummy (at least during the day). Be patient. He will sit up when he is ready. Most of the time, these important milestones happen naturally.

Do you have a bumbo? They can help but really he will do it in his own time , 6 months is a guideline , not all babies can sit up at 6 months , my youngest didn't start sitting until she was 8 months.

Mine didn't sit up until after 6 months, I sat them in a bumbo type seat. My two were preemies and the pedi said even some full term babies don't sit up until a little later. Just play and talk to him and have fun, don't stress too much about hitting milestone targets, all babies develop at different rates. If you are concerned about anything, call your pediatrician.

Babies need alot of time NOT in seats and being able to lay flat on their backs and stomachs. This is where they develop strength to roll over and hold their heads up and do all the things that they need to do, including crawl. If they are always in seats or being held and do not get time to develop their own muscles they are like blobs and will develop slower. I held mine alot but in between I laid them flat either in their bed or on a play quilt so they could develop muscles.

I would spend more time having him on his stomach. My son hated tummy time so I didn't do it as much as I should have. He ended up being a little weak in the core and never crawled (strong legs; always wanted to stand). He still has slightly weak core muscles (bad posture at times and can't lay on his stomach w/o holding his head in his hand within 1 or 2 minutes) but is a perfectly normal 5 year old. Even if your baby cries, force tummy time at least 10+ minutes a day (you can break that up...not 10 minutes at once unless he loves it). He will work it out. A baby who is early to sit up, usually does so at about 5 months. I wouldn't worry about his progress at this point; he's most definitely not slow to sit up at this point in time.
