Help Me Get This Smell Out!!!

We were fostering a pregnant cat. She had her kitties here in the house (my daughter's room) for 2 weeks until the smell got so bad that I HAD to put them in the garage. That was a week ago. I scrubbed her walls with lysol, steam cleaned the carpets, washed her rug, and washed her bedding. I have to keep the door closed most of the day so that my 3 year old will stay out of her big sissy's room. Every time I open the door, I get knocked out by the smell! Sigh! What else can I do? Any helpful secrets? Right now I have it opened with a candle going, but I know that it's just a temp. fix. I guess I should clarify that it isn't urine. She just had the stinkiest poop and the smell seeped into the room.

Oh, and don't worry about the kitties. They are just fine and comfy out in the garage. :)

What can I do next?

I think the smell is probably in the carpets if washing everything didn't do anything. If you think it's still in the washables, you can soak everything in Borax for awhile before washing as usual. If it's in the carpet, the only thing you can do to really get rid of the smell is get new carpet and pad. If you can, remove the carpet a few days before it's replaced so you can smell around the bare floor. We had to paint much of the wood subfloor with Kilz primer to get rid of the smell. It was a big pain, but once the new floor was done, we were very glad we did it because it didn't smell at all! If you think it's in the walls too, I guess you could do the same thing. It's just a lot of work! Good luck!

If the smell is cat urine and it is in the carpet, I hate to say that the only way to really get it out is to replace the carpet.

Try using Simple Solution. you can use it on the carpets, walls, and also in the washing machine. It works great on all kind of animal and human smells. You can get it at Petsmart.

If it's underneath the floor..you might have to rip up the carpet and sand the floors...that's what my brother had to do with a house with *that smell*.

We use Nature's miracle for all kinds of cat messes and it seems to work well. I have put it in the steam cleaner before to help make sure it really got in there. If she has a window in her room, can you open that a little to help the room air out. There are also pet odor candles, some vet's office sell them. The candles smell great and they really do pull the odor out. I worked in a vet's office and we used them around the office for general use, but also if we had a smelly pet for various reason. Owners loved them and I use them in my home now, love my pumpkin and apple ones.

Hi Bethany,

Go to Petsmart and buy a black light. It will enable you to see exactly where the body fluid actually is. If there's none on the carpet you're good to keep it. If it's in the carpet I have to agree with Jen...toss it. If you have to toss it, use the black light on the pad when you pull it up. If it has the slightest bit on it, it needs to go too and check the floor under the pad as well to scrub and clean it. I actually had to cut sheetrock out of the base of the wall because the cat sprayed....

Once you get to wood or concrete, then you need to clean. I used a product called Solumel and got the smell out of the wood and concrete. It's a pretty heavy duty product and you can only get it online but it is natural and will break down natural "stinky" enzymes really well. Let me know and I can gert you some more info on it if you have to go that far...

The black light saved my sanity and hurried the process so it was over quickly! No one even knows there was ever a cat or any kind of animal in the house.

God bless,

M.

We have 2 cats, and we started using the new Febreze laundry odor eliminator every time we do a load, it truly works miracles. We have a male cat who has urinary problems and when he gets an infection he will pee (not poop) on the dirty clothes instead of his box, we have the litter boxes in the laundry room, and if this stuff can get the awful smell of cat urine out im sure it will work on the other stuff.

Congratulations on the new little family members.
It occurs to me that the smell may have soaked down into the floor.
You mentioned carpets and rug but not the floor . . . .
Has big sister been able to sleep in her room?
or has she had to move to the couch or somewhere else?
Perhaps some of the moms here will have recommendations
about what it would take to get the smell out of the floor.

That's so great that you found room in your home for fostering! There are so many kitties in need of help!
I work at a "cat only" animal hospital - when our clients have this problem we recommend an enzyme cleaner (the one i like is called Anti-Icky Poo) sprayed on every surface! and if the smell is really deep, sometimes you have to fill a syringe with the cleaner and inject it into the carpet pad with a needle.
Good luck!

Good for you! Those kitties are so lucky you helped them.

I haven't had a cat in years, but I do have a dog that loves to "spray" the same stinky scent that similar to the cat's smell. I use Nature's Miracle Stain and Odor Remover for my dog's spray. But, I know I'll have to steam clean the carpet and/or remove it to completely get rid of the smell.

Good luck!
