Help 7 Wk U/s Twins, Only One Heart Beat

My niece was pregnant, started spotting and went to the ER. Her doctor did the sonogram and said the baby was just fine . . . then he saw an empty sack. He said, "OMG, you were pregnant with twins (her mom was a twin) and lost one. The other one she carried full term and he now 23 years old, going into the ministry!!!!

I am sorry to hear about this. I, too, had a multiple pregnancy, but only one baby was viable (found out from early ultrasound due to high risk pg). I did deliver the healthy baby and "lost" the non-viable twin. I did have some bleeding and spotting in the first trimester which the doctor said was related to "losing" the other twin, but the viable twin survived it.

Like other posters have said, this is probably alot more common than people ever realized now that ultrasounds are done earlier and technology has advanced so much. That doesn't make it hurt any less, though :(

as someone else said, multiple pregnacies are much more common now because we have early ultrasounds, which they used to not do. many women never knew they were originally having twins, and went on to have one baby. there is no reason to think your remaining baby wont be perfectly fine.

i hope everything works out for you. at this point, wait for your next ultrasound to make sure the results are the same. there is always a chance for mistakes at 6 1/2 weeks. however, if the results are the same, then grieve your lost baby, but remember you still have a little one coming.

Believe it or not, most pregnancies start out as multiples, but for one reason or another, one of the babies doesn't make it. As a mom of twins myself (who found out at 4 weeks we were getting twins) I pray everything works out for you.

A friend of mine had a miscarriage around 8 wks. When she went back for a followup, they found a heartbeat and she was still pregnant. Her dr. told her it had been a twin pregnancy. The remainder of the pregnancy went with no problems, and she recently gave birth to the other twin, a healthy baby boy!

Yes, many more pregancies begin multiples than end as such. My thoughts and prayers to you and your family -- follow your doctor's attitude, and research for yourself as well. Knowledge helps greatly. You WILL get through!

I lost a twin with my youngest daughter. I had an ultrasound at 9 weeks and the doctor saw that I had two sacs and it looked like the other one passed at around 6 weeks. The doctor warned me that I'd have a little bleeding but it would mostly be absorbed. I had a little brown bleeding and that was it. I guess it's quite common and sometimes referred to as the vanishing twin syndrome.

I have been in your shoes, and it is hard not to worry I know. Went into the doctor's office at 13 weeks due to minor bleeding and found out I was having twins and saw the u/s. At 16 weeks they were both doing fine and then found out at my 20 week visit that one had died. It was very scary and stressful because I was so worried about the second baby. I grieved the loss of one baby but was so happy to still have one healthy baby in my arms in the end. Best of luck to you!

My daughter went to the ER because she was hurting severely and hadn't had a regular period. The ER staff examined her, did tests, and then sent her home with a diagnosis of blighted ovum...... fancy word for "Well, you were pregnant, but it died." They told her to see her regular OB because she was probably not going to pass it herself and would need a D & C. Life was busy for her and she thought she would see if she passed it without having to have the surgical procedure. When she didn't pass it, she finally made the appointment to go see her regular OB. It was a sad situation so she didn't say much at all. The doctor ordered a blood test, u/a, and then a sonogram and came back to congratulate my daughter on her pregnancy. She is now 6 months pregnant and that child is wild. You can see her kicking through her mother's shirt. I said all that to say this, time will tell. Sometimes one twin doesn't make it for some reason. That doesn't affect the other twin. Don't be worried, get ready to have that single birth and if you get a surprise on delivery day, you will have two babies to bring home.

Don't worry---don't stress!! This happened to me. After tryng for 5 yrs to get pregnant, I was overjoyed at the doctor's office when he showed me the heartbeat in one sac. Whne I asked what is that as I pointed to what was the second sac, the doctor said, "That is a sac, but there's no heartbeat. But look here (pointing to the other sac) a stong heartbeat. Congratulations! You're going to finally be a mom." I was estastic and when he left the room, I admit I cried for 2 reasons. The baby developing inside of me and the one that wouldn't. That pregnancy went well and my daughter is strong, beautiful and smart. Honestly, there were times that I did think what it would have been like to have twins, was it a boy or a girl? After the pregnancy, I was told that she was a blessing because of my health issue and that Chances are I could never get pregnant again. Well, when my first child was 6 months old...I was pregnant again and now have two precious children. You'll be fine!!!!!!
