I am almost 38 weeks pregnant and I was just wondering if any one has tried castor oil to kick start the labor process. DOES IT WORK???

What can I do next?

Hi T., I found that walking up and down stairs helped. I have also heard that eating spicy spanish food toward the end works. Some radio DJ here swears by A1 steak sauce. Good luck.

When you have sex two hormones are at work to help with labor. One of them softens the area and the other stimulates contractions (I think oxytocin and progesterone). I just remember that from my labor class. You don't have to have sex...you can get one of the hormones on your own. I had sex a few hours before my baby boy came out...but i also did a lot of walking when i was pregnant.i don't know anything about the castor oil, although i've heard it works. good luck

Hi T., I have had four boys in the last eight years and every time I was near the end I did the castor oil thing...and for me it worked! It didn't throw me into full blown labor but it sped up the contractions. Good Luck!

Did you read other posts on this topic? There was another post on this maybe three weeks ago.
From what I've read, there are important developments in lungs during the last few weeks of pregnancy. Don't try to go too early.
Good luck.

Your only 38 weeks. I know it's seems like a good idea but using that stuff can have bad effects. That baby will come when it's ready. You have gone throught this before so more than likely when it starts it will go fast. Dont' quote me but I think drinking raspberry tea can help. Go for walks, have sex, do some relaxation/meditaion. You only have a few more weeks at the most, yeah this is coming out of my mouth who couldn't wait for mine to come out! LOL

I know I read that spicy food, long walks and sex can all induce labor. Sex especially. But I would check with your OB to make sure the baby's lungs are working...the whole fetal breathing thing. But at 38 weeks you should be fine my doctor induced me at 38 weeks and 1 day. Good Luck to you.

if you are so eager, talk to your doc, maybe (s)he will induce. Dont use castor oil, it can give the baby poops inside which can be toxic when the water breaks.

Hello!

I went to massage school and I've put 6 women into labor within 30 mins. to 8 hours after rubbing the right pressure points.

Rub your belly, ankles, top of your shoulders and your lower back. The lower back sent me into labor within 30 mins! Good Luck!

i've heard that many women have tried it but you are only 38 weeks pregnant and i wouldn't worry about going into labor now

i was exactly 40 weeks and i tried all of the things they say will jump start labor but none of them worked on me

i ended up having a c-section because of complications so i would n't worry about your little

they will choose when they want to come

Castor Oil sounds disgusting! I went into labor at 39 weeks. I worked up to the day my water broke so I don't know about walking, but I did make my hubby have sex and deposit at least once a day. Also, my OB scrapped my membranes which was the day before my water broke. I really think that did the trick! If you have a cool OB she'll help you with the process or better yet....schedule an induction. My induction was scheduled the day after I ended up giving birth! Perfect!

No, it doesn't. Well, it didn't do anything but make my stomach upset. The only thing that actually started some contractions was sex. However, it didn't keep them going. Just keep walking and try to enjoy the last moments of sleep you can get.

Castor oil is an old wives tale, and you know how they are...hit or miss. I don't recommend it. Your not even at your due datel. Let nature take its course.

I wish I could say it helped. I tried it and everyone else I know that has tried it and it has done nothing for us except rid you of all that is in your intestines and make your behind rare and sore. The only good thing is that if you do go into labor on your own you won't have to worry about any embarrasing "accidents" occuring from that end! LOL I think the baby will come when it wants to come. Don't you hate hearing that? I did but unfortunately I think it's true :(

If you do try it and it works let us know! Good luck to you!

I don't know anything about castor oil (yuck!) but I've heard of getting a pedicure: something to do with the pressure points in your feet that stimulate labor- usually when you get the foot massage part of the pedicure. If nothing else, it's a great excuse to go pamper yourself, get pretty toes, and relax before your little one is born! PS I've heard sex stimulates labor as well :)

my friend went swimming to get her labor started
& it seemed to work (who knows?)
and I went walking to get mine going & it worked (again, who knows?)- but I was already having a few contractions here & there- nothing regular- but more than just braxton hicks- good luck :-)

Hi T.,

I don't have any personal experience with the castor oil, however, I have two friends who used it when it was delivery time and it work beautifully for them both. Best of luck and God bless!!

Let me put this simply...sex kick starts labor. OR if the thought of sex in your third trimester makes you ill...dancing (for some reason, I went into labor the next day after dancing up a storm. Joshua was a few weeks early. He apparently felt that he wanted to be a part of the fun.).

Seriously, I was told that sex can kick start labor. Hells bells, I didn't want my hubby to touch me at that stage of the pregnancy. :-)

Personally, just give your wee one time. If she wants to brew a little longer in your belly then so be it. Josh just happened to be a "It's time to party, get me out of here." baby.
