The season is approaching where my 3 year old and 17 month old will be eating sack lunches for great outings. We always do the usual peanut butter and jelly or cream cheese and jelly sandwiches and a bunch of grapes.

I wanted to get some different lunch ideas that I can pack for eating in the car or out and about. Snack foods are easy it is the main course that I am stumped on.

Hey S.---How have you been doing at finding recipes/ideas for quick and portable meals? I'd like to share that I have a collection of websites and articles with just such advice. Too much detail to go into now, besides, I'd need to send attachments and that's not possible through this forum.

Let me know if you are interestd and then I'll send you my personal email. Give me a call if you have any questions. In health, D. ###-###-####

I do a lot of peanut butter sandwiches because two of my kids are not big fans of lunchmeat. Popular choices are pb and raisins, pb and honey , and pb and banana. Celery and peanut butter is also good for snacking.

S.,

To save money and still have a nutritious lunch I use leftovers from dinner the night before and wrap them up in a tortilla. Sometimes I add a dressing, sauce, or mustard along with lettuce, tomatoes and other cut up veggies.

As long as you cut up any large pieces into smaller bites for your children they should not have any problem gobbling up left-over wraps.

Good luck!

You can always grill a turkey/ham sandwich ahead of time and have it cut up for the kids. As long as you have a thermos/cooler it will stay good. I've done that with my 14 month old and it's worked well.

My daughter loves roll ups on the run...I take lunch meat and roll it around a piece of chease and cut it into bite size pieces. I have a great tupperware that fits the main course on one side and fruit on the other and I stack it with an ice pack and it stays cool forever. It's fast and easy and she can open the tupperware and eat all the little bites herself. This was a great question...I got a few new ideas myself!

I found the most wonderful healthy snack! It is in the frozen vegetables section of VGs. It is frozen Edamame (soybeans)…. But the kind I found is pre-shelled, so you can eat them right out of the bag; and they are organic, and they come in individual snack size packages that you can thaw in the microwave for 1-2 minutes. Each package is 59 cals, 5g protein, 5 g carb, 1.5g fat, 17 mg sodium, 2g dietary fiber.. I just ate them straight from the pouch. These happen to be marketed by Nickelodeon (Seapoint Farms brand) so they have Dora on front.

One of my kids "car" favorites were roll ups. I would have tortillas with turkey/ham and cheese. I would melt the cheese for a few seconds and then roll them so they were easy for toddlers to eat. I also had thremos type containers for soups or pasta as they got a little older. It helped keep mac/cheese warm if I put boiling water in it first to warm it up and then added the hot dish.

Hi S.
I pack lots of friut and a smoothie w/ protien powder in it in a cooler.
You could look up protien bar recepies. My daughter has a texture thing and dosen't like chunks. So I grind sunflower seeds (vit E), pepitas (iron), before adding them.
Hapy dashing about. A. H

My daughter loves pre-packaged cheese sticks. They're the same shape as string cheese but you can also get them in cheddar and other kinds of cheese and, unlike string cheese, they're less messy. They're good for the car because there is little to no mess and they're a good source of protein/calcium. You can also try frozen tortellini with no sauce. I get a frozen package of them and as long as your kids don't mind them cold, it's basically like eating cheese and noodles but with little to no mess.

Naked nuggests are a grilled chicken nugget that can be eaten warm or cold, depending on your child's preference. Keep them wrapped in tinfoil and in a thermos to stay warm. Perfect source of protein for lunch on the run.
