I noticed a bug in my daughters hair a couple of days ago and didn't think anything of it. Well, saw another one today and after some checking determined it is LICE! YUCK!!! So, I did the Nix treatment and combed and picked the heck out of it. My kids are already in school, so do I send her? I've never had experience with Lice, so I do not know the protocol. I did read that once your kids starts itching, they were probably infested 2-4 weeks prior. I am thinking wait till morning and call the school nurse and see what her protocol is. Any answers in the meantime would be helpful. Thanks so much!
Thanks for the advice ladies. I had to drop my other child off at school this morning so I took her to the nurse and she did a head check. No more bugs, but still lots of nits to work on. Once those are gone, she can go back, I will just need to have her checked by the nurse for the official green light. In the meantime, we are doing lots of cleaning both the house and her head. And will be now shampooing all kids with tea tree oil! I never knew what a nuisance lice was, this is my first experience and it is no fun! Thanks again for all the advice.
I put some drops of tea tree oil on her shampoo and detangled, and yes you need to notify school but I believe if you already treat them they can go to school.
You need to notify the school nurse and her teacher or it will keep going full circle if all the kids aren't checked (in our school the nurse does it to each kid in her office). You need to vacuum like crazy including all furniture and your car seats where you all sit. You should also check anyone else in the household. If you don't have anyone to check you, the school nurse can do that for you too.
Also as a prevenative in the future, use tea tree shampoo. Paul Mitchell has a great one and also if you have a Great Clips around you, they sell a shampoo and spray-leave in conditioner too. I thinks it's called Lice Defense or something like that. I personally like the tea tree shampoo better but my kids complain it burns their eyes but i tell them they won't have to ever have to deal with the Nix shampoo then.

Treat with Rid or Nix, then in 9 days treat again. You don't even need to pick out the nits. You don't need to steam clean everything. You don't even need to wash the pillows. Seriously, you don't. Send her to school tomorrow. Let the nurse know. Everything will be fine! I promise! :)
Call the school. Depends on the school whether or not she can go to school. I worked as an aide and that school would not allow a child to return to school until all lice and nits were gone. The child had to be checked before attending class.
Yes, call the nurse at school. Do the treatment, wash all bedding, steam clean the carpets and furniture and replace all hairbrushes. It took a good long 6 months to get this out of our house after a church infestation with 4 girls in the house.

Make sure you notify the school nurse so that they can check the other kids. If she got it from another kid at school, you wouldn't want her to get reinfected or other kids to get it either.

I think that the protocol is to keep the child home and to let the school know. Yes, call the school to find out and clean everything (sheets, pillows, stuffed toys, etc). Good luck!

most schools will expect you to keep child home till it's treated, and you need to notify them so they can check your other kids, and they will check other student's as well.
I know with as many times as my girls had it I should be an expert. LOL
My girls were lice magnets for years. My girls the meds did not work for them (probably because of how many times they had them) so I usually had to go strand by strand to remove the bugs and eggs.

You have to go into the nurse's office and have her head inspected.
The usual procedure is that you do the treatment after she has the lice.
Nurse has to inspect her head before returning to class so that no other kids get them.
Tell her not to put on anyone's hats or hair accessories and also it is not a good idea to put on other kids jackets.
It is said they can get it from the sand box, but I have never known anyone that it happened to because of the sand box.

Some other options I was given to help take care of them was coat the hair in mayo for an hour then wash it out. Use vinegar to help get the nits out. Some even went so far as to use hair dye and that kills the eggs and bugs.

make sure you let the school know. when i was in grade school whenever anyone had a lice breakout they had to let the school know so the nurses could do a head check and so the classrooms could bag the book bags and the coats and they checked heads about a couple times a week for a couple weeks to make sure no heads were infected and then the kid was sent home and before they could go back to school they had to go to the administration building and get checked their. one year almsot my whole class ahd lice and we were out for a week. my mom ahd to do three or four treatments on me
