I'm considering going back to school for nursing. I have a Bach. degree in Hospitality Management with a minor in Travel and Tourism. As you know the business field in that area is poor. I have considered going back to school for nursing. I have many questions as to will it be worth going back? I know the waiting list is long. Can I jump into nursing classes. Am I too old (35)? What other options should I consider in the nursing field? I want to be an RN, but maybe there is another area that I can still work with people and enjoy?
Any input is appreciated. I'm a mother of 2 girls and married to a wonderful husband for 11 years.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your wonderful answers :) I'm still deciding what to do. The Ultra Sound Tech sounds great too! I plan to check into a local college and see what options I have with careers and financial aid. My other thought is if we move, I want to make sure everything will transfer if needed. I wish I was serious back when I was 18 but I can see the future could be better then expected! Thanks again! You all have been wonderful!!!

I think you have the right idea. When I was in nursing school, we had classmates in their 40s and 50s. Mind you, they were LVNs getting their RN. The nice thing is that once you have your RN, the field is open with options. Good luck.

I may add that you may be put on a waiting list to get into nursing school since there's so few spots available in a program but so many applicants.

I am considering becoming an Ultrasound Tech myself but I do know the program I am looking into requires you to have a 2 year degree in Allied Health, which I do have. I just have a few pre-reqs to take (plus finding the time to take them!).

Hope this helps, good luck to you!

<grinning> TECHNICALLY, since you already have your 4year, you'll be a BSRN, which is a jump in pay.

You WILL however, have to complete a number of pre-reqs before you can even apply to a nursing school. These are (usually)

- Biology
- Anatomy & Physiology I & II
- Inorganic Chemistry (this ranges from 1 quarter to 3 quarters depending on your area)
- Organic Chemistry (this ranges from 1 quarter to 3 quarters depending on your area)
- Microbiology
- Nurtrition

The unfortunate bit, is that you won't qualify for aid post-bacc'ing. You can still take out loans, but any grants/scholarships will have to wait until you're in nursing school. The fortunate bit is that sooooo many people post-bacc there's a phrase for it. <G> And no... you're not too old by a LONG shot. In 30 years you *might* be too old, since you'd be past retirement age, to find a job easily... but 35 is young.

Hi Jennifer. We can always use a great nurse no matter at what age. It does take a while to become a nurse, have you consider Ultrasound tech? If you have your pre-requsites for nursing done it might help you get into the nursing school faster. Let me know if you have any other questions. Best of luck.
