Has Anyone Had Forcepts Used During C-section Birth?

I have a new nephew who was born today. He is a healthy 8.4 lb baby. He has red marks on his head and the nurse said it's because he is a "big baby", they had to use forceps. Why would forceps be needed during a c-section birth? During a c-section aren't the doctors hands forceps? This is really upsetting to me. Mom and baby are healthy there were no complications so this doesn't make since to me. Just curious. Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

I want to Thank all of you for your responses. My sister in law and her baby are both healthy and doing well. That is the most important thing of all. I personally had never heard of forceps being used during a c-section delivery and knew Mamasource was the best way to find out if this was common or not. Thanks again and I hope the very best for you and your families.

I pushed for 3 hours before getting sent to the OR - they had to use forceps, vaccumm and two different people to get him out because his head was engaged in the birth canal from pushing for so long - he was 9 lb 10oz - I had to have a traverse c-section - a second incision in my uterus b/c he was basically stuck (sorry for the bad spelling this am)-as long as they are o.k. that is all that matters, my little one ended up in the NICU for 2 1/2 days - congrats!

I had an emergency c-section due to fetal distress with my first and the doc used the vaccuum to get him out. He was 8lbs 1oz.

It depends on where the baby is and the position. The doc almost used them when I had mine 10 years ago. Turned out he didn't need it after all. My daughter slipped into place after he got my son out.

My doctor didn't want to make the incision any larger than needed and ended up using the vacuum to assist. Not sure about your sister/sister-in-law but my incision, as with most non-emergency C-section incisions, was only about 3 inches wide, very low and tranverse (meaning horizontally cut).

Congratulations on the new family member!

We just covered this in my antenatal class. Sometimes forceps are used to get a better more secure grip on the baby during a c-section. If the baby and mom are fine, don't worry.
