Ok when I was pregnant with my son I love to read, I read Harry Potter books and Chronicals of Narnia. Well now Hary Potter Movies is all he wants to watch well all he sits and watches... he wont sit for Cartoons but he will for Harry Potter, but when the elf bangs his head my husband thinks thats why my baby hits his against the wall, I havent let him watch that one in a while.... could that cause him to want to bang his head? I mean he throws tantrums and thats mostly when he does that....what do I need to do?

What can I do next?

There are a lot of reasons why your son could be banging his head when upset. Yes, he could be imitating what he sees on tv or he could just be one of the children that bangs his head when frustrated, which believe it or not is normal. See an excerpt from an article by Dr. Greene below or check out the website at http://www.drgreene.com/21_1104.html.

"Some kids bang their heads out of frustration or anger, as in a temper tantrum. Head banging is an effective attention-seeking maneuver. The more reaction children get from parents or other adults, the more likely they are to continue this habit.

Generally, healthy children do not head-bang in order to injure themselves.

Who gets it?
Up to 20 percent of healthy children are head-bangers for a time. Typically, head banging appears in the latter half of the first year of life and generally ends spontaneously by four years of age. Boys are three or four times more likely to be head-bangers than girls."

Also, on a side note, if you love Harry Potter books than you will love this new book called, "One Wizard Place" by D.M. Paul. Check out the web site...http://www.onewizardplace.com.

I hope this helps.

There's lots of information on the web about head banging. My kids didn't do it but it's apparently very common.

My kids favorite things to watch at that age was baby einstein videos... espcially "world animals" or "neigborgood animals"!

Hi, I just wanted to say that head banging is VERY common! In my sons playgroup more then half of the children went throught that phase- my son included.

He still does it at times and it drives me nuts lol. I just simply pick him up and explain that its not good and he can hurt himself. It ussualay stops him from doing it!

Dont worry too much about it unless he is banging hard enough to hurt himslef!

I would hold off on Harry Potter for a while too though and see if it helps out too. I personally feel it is a little "old" for a toddler.. but thats just my opinion.

I don't think banging his head has anything to do with that. When my little girl was 2 she would throw tantrums and bang her head into anything that was in the way. If is a common behavioral stage some kids go through. I work at a Pediatric Office and we see several kids that do this. They even have to make special helmet for kids sometimes that are really bad. Usually the child will stop before it gets to the point of really doing any harm to him or herself. It will pass. But good luck, the closer they get to 2 the more trying it is!

I know this is delyed response but i dont think the movie has anything to do with it. When my son was 2 he would hit his head on the floor when he got mad. When we moved into our new house he didnt get the toy he wanted so he sat on the kitchen floor and slammed his head into it. At our old house the floors were wood and they didnt hurt him but at this new house the were concrete and it hurt. He figured it out and he never did it again. They just have to break themselves of it. Ignore him when he does it. when you respond hes getting the attention he wantd out of you. And yes my son was fine...it was just a shock that it hurt.

I am a grandmother and have seen a lot in my time.... I have studied and read many things about the Harry Potter series. It is amazing how accurate it is to witchcraft and many leaders are urging parents not to let their children watch these things especially "little" ones. Things they watch on TV and in movies does set a pattern of behavior. My daughter has had this battle and when she started limiting TV to things she had recorded and previewed it was amazing how much was not good for children and taught them bad behavior especially no respect for adults. Just keep hm away from them all together and it will pass. Have quiet times of reading age appropriate materials....boys are very visual and have a tendacy to carry out what they see. I urge you to take charge and only fill your son's mind with uplifting materials and do not pay attention to people who say "oh,it is just a movie" your son is not old enough to know the difference. I will be praying for you and if in doubt go to your Pastor and ask him.
Blessings,

Harry potter is prob not the reason why he hits his head on the wall there could be many reasons hes not the first kid to do it during a tantrum. BUT I do think he is too young of Harry potter, I think harry potter is best left for when kids can distinguish between fantasy and reality.Until about 4 or 5 yrs old everthing they see is real.

I have 3 children and I can tell you they definatly reinact what they see on tv.

My middle child use to always reinact Scooby Doo. You know when they would start to run how they would stand sideways with one arm back and one leg back and then take off. It was hallarious. Both my sons also use phrases from the cartoons.

Hi!

I love Harry Potter too! I'm a former elementary school teacher and I teach a newborn care class at a local hospital. I've done some research on children and tv and I don't like what I've found. First of all, I do watch tv and my girls do too. I don't think it's all bad. I'll just share with you that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of two get NO tv at all. I think your instincts are correct and as I tell my newborn class, parents know best! Listen to your gut.

Also, I do think that children (at least the ones I've taught) are exposed to way too much violence and adult material too early. We may think "Well, they don't understand it so it's okay." but it's not. They have those images in their mind. We can't erase them. So, follow the guides that the MAA gives us. If it's a "G" rated movie, then follow your gut. If it's PG or over, it's not for young children. Period!

A book that really helped me was a book by Winn called "The Plug In Drug." It was eye-opening for me!

I hope this helps and good luck!
