O.k .so my daughter was sent home from school friday because she developed a fever during class, complained about a sore throat and seemed fine last night only to wake up with sores in her mouth and around her mouth...ya so this is our first time dealing with this illness I have a three year old who woke up with a fever this mornign so I am guessing he is next... :( my question is how do 9mo olds handle something like this I imagine with how rapid this is passing through that our little one is going to be next. (my husband was sick the same time as my daughter so we thought it was just a sore throat cold...we were wrong) what should I watch out for with my 9mo old. I hear all these stories about baby's not nursing anymore after this illness and I am so not ready to stop as this is the first time I have suceeded and I worked very, very hard to be sucessful this go around. Any thoughts, words of wisdom... Oh and of course my biggest concern is myself getting sick as we are moving this weekend and have to be out by the end of the month. :( Thank you

What can I do next?

your 9 month old might be spared since you are still nursing.... Keep thinking that way. I think its rare that the nursing would stop, you might have a little down time but it would be no different than any other time they get sick and lose their appetite or cant breathe out of their nose well so they dont eat much. Just do what you need to do to keep your supply up if he/she does get sick.

Wow-Can't believe you ar moving on top of all this! My son is just getting over HFM. Its a really painful thing for the kids to deal with. My younger son had it at about one and it made him stop the bottle and also the binky. I would say to really keep up with trying to keep the germs away from your baby. I bet you that he will be OK-it is not a guarantee that everyone gets it. When my younger son had it his brother who was 3 did not get it and neither did DH or me.

use common sense in keeping the baby away, washing hands, sanitizing, cleaning surfaces, etc. My 18 mo got it BAD....just in his mouth, but it was BAD!!!!!!!! I kept them away from each other (the best I could). And my 3 year old NEVER got it..

BTW, from what I know, once they get this, they will never get it again.
Chance are you have been exposed in the past, and will not get it. Plus our immune systems are stronger.

If your 9mo old get it, ask your dr about the magic mouthwash.....it temporarily numbs the mouth and helps with the pain.

It's a virus and like all viruses it seems to spread at the mere mention of it. The best thing to do is to keep washing hands and try to keep them away from the baby as much as you can. No touching the baby's face or kissing. I know, I know....almost impossible!
It's not likely that if the baby does get it, it will cause the baby to fully wean. That baby might now want to nurse as much or for as long, especially of it's accompanied by a sore throat. Just keep offering. If the baby does get it, give Ibuprofen for the sore throat and then try to nurse about 10 mins after you give the medicine. The Ibuprofen will help with the sore throat and make swallowing a bit easier. Don't be freaked out if the baby really decreases nursing though. It happens when they get sick.
Fingers crossed that it passes quickly!

my daughter got it at 13 months (she is not in any type of daycare or school). we took her to her dr and she confirmed what i thought that it was hfm. she handled it well and i just took it day by day. your child was contagious before she showed sores so it is already spread. you should not get this illness since you are above the age of 5.

I'll say a little prayer the baby doesn't get it.

Ilnesses in our house tend to go in threes.

Three of us get it (out of 5), then it's gone.

Good Luck, hope everybody feel better!

With your 9mo old... Wait for the fever and screaming for no reason. Nursing will likely soothe the throat. DAIRY DAIRY DAIRY! That's what I was told will help. So if you don't have an issue with dairy, eat it... Lots of it so the 9mo old will get that too.

In an adult (I got it too while my little guy was sick with it) the virus is extremely mild compared to anyone pre-pubescent (sp?). Tylanol/Motrin switch off will help with the pain as well. Do Tylanol first and 2hrs after that, Motrin and dose accordingly after that.

My hubby and I had no idea what it was or the beginning symptoms of it. When my son got it, he woke up from his nap screaming and wouldn't stop (because of pain - as I found out later)... That was not like our son at all! So, we took him to Urgent Care (on a Sat evening) and the Dr there sent us to the ER! We were FREAKED OUT! They couldn't figure out what was going on (after a catheter to check for bladder infection, blood draws, x-rays, thermometer up the rear, and a general checkup). The following Monday, I took him into his regular pedi. He knew right away what it was. Our pedi gave us an emergency # of his to call after that... But he said that it would be extremely painful and show no signs of the sores that first night. Which is why the ER couldn't figure it out after all that torture. : (

I asked our pedi what to do... He said, 'The prescription is ice cream.' Our son's eyes LIT UP when he said that! Granted our son wasn't 9mos old, but he was still only 18mos old.

Good luck mama! Don't eat anything spicy until you KNOW your little guy isn't going to get it!

Just keep trying to nurse. The baby might not want anything if there are sores in his mouth.

Also, take care of yourself - wash your hands non stop!! I got it from my daughter and I thought I was going to die my throat hurt so much and my fever was a nightmare!!

Good luck - I hope everyone is feeling well soon!!

Wow how did your 5 yr old get this? From my knowledge it is spread by caregivers not washing their hands in between diaper changes. My daughter got this from a daycare when she was 2 and a half. I never took her back again. It is painful and contagious from what her doctor told me. I would wash hands very good and keep your 2 older ones away from baby. I hope you guys dont get it.
