My 2 yr old had contracted H.F.M.D...
I was told that it is viral and it has to run its course, but his fever is pretty high. I'm switching back and forth bewteen ibuprofen and tylenol, is there anything I can do to make him more comfortable?

What can I do next?

I don't know much about H.F.M.D but for the fever this really works. It sounds like an old wives tale but on my children adn my best friends children who could not break their fevers, It really worked.
(depending on where blisters are)
Get Vicks vapor rub CREAM (childrens), and rub it in behind there knees, bottoms of feet, and thier elbows at bed time. You may have to do this a couple of bed times, but in most instances, mine & my best friends case, one time only worked to break the fever.

Put cool compresses on the back of the neck and the wrists. In your wrist is the thinest skin and the cool compresses will cool the blood as it goes through. On the back of the neck helps cool the head area and will help bring down the fever. Also keep giving the tylenol/motrin as you have been. Keep up with the compresses until he is more comfortable. The fever may spike again, but you can keep up with the compresses if necessary. Good luck.

My daughter got hand foot and mouth several times when she was younger because it is so highly contagious and it just spread throughout her day care. Unfortunately, all you really can do is switch fever reducers. It never lasted very long with my daughter though, a few days at most.

HFMD is painful. One thing you can do for the mouth sores is swab with something like Mylanta. It coats the sores and helps with mouth pain. Be careful, though, about alternating Tylenol and Motrin. If the fever is high (104 or greater), alternating is helpful, as well as lukewarm baths. Just be careful with the meds- the liver can only handle so much. Maybe his physician can give you a prescription for Tylenol with Codeine. I recently read some scarey stuff about Motrin and have stopped using it on my children (which was HARD, cause I loved it- especially for teething). A visit to the doc might not be a bad idea since you might want to make sure nothing else is going on. I hope he gets better soon!

My 7 yr old just got over this. He caught it from my fiance who caught it from my 3 yr old. fortunately it skipped me. My 7 yr old ran high fevers for almost 7 days. I keep tylenol and motrin in him. I rotated to where he was getting something every two hours. If your son has sores in his mouth, they can usually give him something to numb. They were going to give my 7 yr old some suckers with numbing meds on them but instead they gave him a mouthwash to numb. i also used cold rags placed on his head to help cool his fevers. best of luck!

My daughter just had this last week. I took her to the dr. and she said the same thing -- that it just has to run its course. I alternated Tylenol and Motrin for the fever (which got up to about 102). She had bumps on her face, arms, and feet but only a couple in her mouth. I took her to the dr. on a Thursday and she was fine by Saturday/Sunday with no fever. She had decreased appetite for a few days but is over that now too. Good luck.

My daughter had this about 6 months ago and it is awfull to see them hurt. I was told the same thing that it would just have to run it's course. I was told by our doctor to use "Magic Mouthwash" it contains equal parts Mylanta (to coat blisters), Tylenol (to help with pain and fever) & Benedryl ( I only assume for rest and help with infection). Also, I kept plenty of fluid available. My daughter is a big eater and her appetite went to nothing for about 5 days. I gave her a lot of fluid, she likes Sprite so it was a lot of that and Chicken soup. I also was worried about the fever, it got very high (102-103 range) but they said to just give her the mouthwash solution every 4 to 6 hours 1 teaspoon and it seemed to help her out. Hope that this helps :) and hope that he gets better soon :)

My friend's children have had this and I heard that it was really painful. See if you can get something stronger than regular ibuprofen and tylenol. I dont know if you went to the doctor already or not but my 2 yearold got sick in march and i called the nurse line and described the symptoms. They told me it sounded like hfmd so I didnt go in because they couldnt do anything anyway. she didnt realy get better so i took her in and she had contracted cold sores from my mother in law. Long story short the pediatrician perscribed tylenol with codeine. That really helped!!! She slept for the first time in days. Good Luck and I hope he feels better soon for his sake and yours.

My dr. gave us the idea of using baby orajel in my son's mouth to help with the pain from the blisters. It seemed to help a good bit. The fever will make him a bit uncomfortable, but if you can let it run it's course, it will help him fight this off *hug* It always sucks when you have to watch your little ones not feeling well... Good Luck!

My almost two year old son also recently had HFMD. I hated seeing the blisters all over him. Unfortunantly I was told ther is nothing you can really do for him, except to try and keep him comfortable with fever reducers. They said to make sure you keep his blisters on his feet covered so that they don't get infected if they are open/pop. Also make sure he is still eating and drinking, that with HFMD the most dangerous part is the blisters in the mouth b/c then they tend to want to stop eating/drinking and get dehydrated. Sorry I couldn't give any good remedies, but it should pass after about a week or two.

You can also try to put a little lotion on all the blisters it is causing. My daughter caught it two summers ago. The doctor said it was from milk that was tainted with it. It is the only thing they can't get rid of with pasturizing. It does go away on its own. Just give it time.
