has anyone heard of celebrating half bdays? how do u do this? here is my issue: my 3yr old boy turns 4 in the middle of august. he wants a party with his school friends like his older brother. i'm not sure what would happen if we were to invite these children after the school year has ended, because he will not be going to school with these kids again the next year. i know this is not a big deal but i feel bad for him, any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

My daughter was born on Christmas so we began having a half-year celebration when she noticed she never really had a party, at about age 7. It is great and as long as you never invite the same folks for a quiet celebration of the "real" birthday, people are as happy for her as if it was her real birthday.

My older 2 both have August birthdays also. You could either send a note home towards the end of the year to the parents in the class, explaining your situation, and requesting addresses so you can send invites, or plan the party early, and send invites home at the end of the school year.

My sister has a daughter with an August birthday. Right near Labor Day. They still do it in August and they get people, some years more than others.

By the end of the year, I'm sure there will be several friends he has bonded with and if you do playdate in the summer, they are sure to come.

You could also do a party towards the end of the year.
You could make it a celebrating the 1st year of preschool party - you'd proabaly get everyone that way.

My daughter is a summer baby, and last year we just invited her classmates. Almost all came (except those on vacation) and were excited to play with their friend.

We always celebrated half-birthdays when I was growing up. My birthday is Dec 17 and my sister's is Dec 30. This always fell during Christmas Vacation in school, plus we lived in MN and it was always cold in the winter. June was a much nicer time to have a birthday party! I thought it was a great solution - plus it avoided all of those dreaded "combination Christmas/birthday gifts".

I think kids take these sorts of things at face value - just say you're having a half-birthday party and they'll be thrilled. We had our party for the half-birthday, but our "real" birthday was still acknowledged with our family (a gift from mom and dad, and my mom would always cook us whatever we wanted for dinner, plus make a cake).

Hi Kirsten,

My nephew was in the same situation. My sister decided to put his party off by two months and then when he started his new school he had time to make new friends to invite to his birthday party.

Best of luck!

My family has celebrated half birthdays since I can remember. My sister and I have birthdays in January and February. Not so exciting right after Christmas. We celebrated in July and August and had parties and got presents, cake too, the whole deal. It was fun to have something to look forward to later in the year. To this day,(I'm 33, my sister is 36) we still celebrate our half birthdays just not in such a big way anymore!
Any reason to celebrate, right?!!
Have fun,
S.

You could ask the teacher for the class list with addresses and mail the invitations directly to the home. good luck.

Hi there. I also have a birthday in August, my mom always sent treats to school for my half birthday. That was when I would have the school birthday celebration. However, in August we would have my birthday celebration, with all my classmates. But we lived in a smaller town, so everyone knew everyone. I don't see anything wrong with having a half year birthday, during the summer you tend to lose contact with some school friends. Don't feel emberassed, it is a cool thing to do for your son. I still to this day remember my half birthday, and how special I felt in February. I'm sure your son will always remember his half birthday as well when he is a grown up. I hope this helps!

I saw a cute idea in a magazine for celebrating the 1/2 birthday. It was to cut a birthday cake in half and decorate it.
