GTT / High Sugar in First Trimester

Hi Mommies, I had gestational diabetes only controlled by diet with my first child and that too in the 7th month. Now I'm only 8 weeks pregnant and GTT was high already. H1bAC was 5.8. There are some horrible things on the internet about having uncontrolled diabetes in the first 8 weeks. Did anybody go through this? Any advice, comments or suggestions??

What can I do next?

An A1C of 5.8 means that your sugars have been running less than 120 which is normal. The concern is usually at 8 or higher. Did your OB tell you it was high? I would check with your OB and make sure you are getting the right answers. If you do indeed have gestational diabetes later in your pregnancy, just make sure you have good control over it. Good luck!

I would say, don't overreact. They called me and told me I had G. Diabetes and to make an appointment, and darned if I didn't go right online and scare the bejezzus out of myself. I was a wreck, but I went to a nutritionist and controlled it through diet and just had my beautiful son, who is not diabetic. Follow the advise and really really work at controlling your diet, it is totally worth it. If they don't send you to a dietician, contact me and I will give you the info they gave me...
Good luck!

I don't really have any info to share, just a suggestion that if you're searching for medical info, stick to REAL medical sites like the ones out there for Mayo Clinic, WebMD, Cleveland Clinic, etc., where the content is overseen by medical professionals--this info is way more trustworthy and accurate than other sites.

Definitely make an appointment w/ your OB asap. You might possibly also want to switch to a high-risk OB or OB that specializes in diabetic moms, or at least get a consultation with one asap.

Hi N., I went through something similar with my second child. I was considered borderline, but was sent to a specialist anyway. The thing about being pregnant is you can't take pills to control it and I basically got lectured about my diet, though no diet sheet was given to me. While my numbers were never bad and probably would have been overlooked if I hadn't been pregnant, it still wasn't good enough. The specialist put me on insulin to control my numbers and insure the baby did not become huge and require a c-section. Once I had my beautiful girl, my numbers were fine. The doctor saw me at the hospital and said I didn't have to come see him anymore. I would seek professionall advice and follow it, but do try to control it with diet if at all possible. Good Luck.
