I AM A YOUNG MOM BARELY MAKING IT IN THIS WORLD. I AM TORN BETWEEN PUTTING MYSELF IN AN EVEN DEEPER HOLE BY SPENDING MORE MONEY FOR A PRIVATE SCHOOL OR SETTLING FOR A PUBLIC SCHOOL.
MY SON HAS ALWAYS BEEN AHEAD OF HIMSELF AND ID LIKE TO PUT HIM IN A SCHOOL THAT CAN CHALLENGE HIM, IM WORRIED THAT BY PUTTING HIM IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL HE WILL GET OVER LOOKED!

What can I do next?

I am a teacher in the public school system. I have a daughter with the same issue. I am concerned about her getting bored. I was advised to get her tested for gifted next year around January/February before she starts Kindergarten. That way she can get staffed into the gifted program before school starts.

I don't want to spend all my money on private school. We too just make ends meet. If our children get into good public schools they will be just fine. My daughter is zoned for a really good public school so I am not too concerned.

I don't know if my daughter is just really smart or if she is gifted. However, I was told it was easier to pass at the Kindergarted level then the older they get.

I hope this helps.

Hi K.,

The public schools in my local area were all "D" schools and the NCLB program paid for my son to go to one of two "A" schools. The local school ("d" school) in my area had a magnet program but that was a joke for any of the kids to get into, there were more slots set aside for kids out of the area...anyway my son is in all the advance classes in Boca Raton because of his scores on the FCATs. They have been wonderful with him. I think it truly depends on the individual school, make sure the school has high grade and your child should be fine, that has been my luck down here so far. Good luck!!!

There is a great Pre-K program, actually its called Volunteer pre-K, paid buy the state, no requirments to join but the child needs to be age 4. There is one in the summer program, the one for all school year I believe starts in August. Can attend the a.m. or the p.m. classes, many schools offer this including some private schools and daycares. And best of all it's FREE!!!

Hi K.,
I am a mother of 3, under the age of 7 and have often struggled with the same thing.

My 3 currently go to private school, however, I recently have looked into the public school system and found that my school has a gifted program that they may be able to test for. There are only 10 in the program so it sounds like that may be something you should look into. There is a cost for them to be tested (around $400). There is also a magnet program in the public schools you may want to look in to.

Let me know if I can offer any additional insight. Good Luck.
