For the past several months, I get sick with a cold the week after my period. Last month the cough lasted through my period this month and here I am, sick again! Has anyone else had this problem? I'm getting really tired of this!

What can I do next?

If nothing else, consult a doctor to see if this is normal or if there is something that is medically wrong to cause this to happen. The doctor may also be able to give you some tips to address this matter to help eliminate this in the future.

You body is weaker after your cycle so it is more suceptible to illness at that time. Since there has been a lot of junk floating around lately and with young kids, it is much easier to get all of it when they do. Make sure you are getting enough fluids during your cycle and if you are not currently taking a multi vitamin, it would be good to start. Halls has a product out called Halls Defense that has vitamin C and Eccenasia (sp?) that can also help boost your immune system.

I agree with Cari; make sure you're taking care of yourself during your period and getting the vitamins and fluids you need. Also, try to get plenty of rest, especially during your period (I know, as a mom, that's easier said than done!).

Stress can also make you more susceptible to illness, so that may be a factor, too. If you can cut out some stress and/or find ways to relax, at least during your period, that may help some. It might also help to get outside for a little while every day--the sunlight and fresh air seem to help keep colds at bay, at least for my family. Since the last cold lasted so long, is it possible that you have seasonal allergies (pollen, mold)?

Other than that, remember to wash your hands often, and make the kids wash their hands often (especially right when they get home from school or day care).

HTH! Good luck, and feel better soon!

I used to do the same thing, but on top of the congestion I would get fever blisters. I started taking L-Lysine in addition to my multi-vitamins and that has helped, not a single fever blister since (hope I didn't just jinx myself). If you can find them, use caplets as the tablets are harder to swallow.

never had that problem, but my first thought when iread it was maybe Pelvic Inflamatory Disease. It usually has other womenly symptoms like cramps, sometimes discharge, or abdominal pain (sometimes severe); however, not all women exhibit these symptoms and it is an infection so it may have some sort of systemic effect. Otherwise, sometimes menses can be draining... be sure to drink plenty of water, do some exercise to lift your energy, and have some extra vitamin c to help you fight things off. If it keeps up, gets worse, or just makes you truly concerned, see your doctor.
