We also did the wagon, we still use it! How about a stuffed animal rocking horse.

Books, books, books!!!

You also might want to get them a sand/water table since the summer months is coming up. Or a wagon.

Don't forget the professional pictures too :)

A wagon, one of those things you connect to your bike (with helmet, of course), a zoo membership, or something else that involves family interaction.

Books, books and more books. What a better way to have family and friends help nurture your childs love of reading than by helping to build her a wonderful library she'll enjoy for the next 5 years or so. Ask people to chosse their favorite books for her, and include a note as to why they picked them for her. you'll both cherish it.

We just celebrated my sons first birthday this past weekend. We did a pirate themed party so we bought him the book "Pirates don't change diapers," and pirate Robeez (shoes)to go along with the theme and also bought him some of the Fisher Price People village to get him started.
I decided it would be nice to start a tradition of always getting him a book that coincides with the theme of his party and write a little personal message in it.

Hi D.!

When my son was 1 we knew he would be getting many gifts from friends and family so we wanted to get him one nice gift that he would get a lot of use out of. We got him a Megaland tent/tunnel system with balls. It folds up easily for storage and can be used inside and outside. You can use all of hte parts of just a few. Kids can be creative and they have so much fun. It's perfect for those days when you're stuck inside too. We have had it for 6 years now and both he and my daughter still use it. I looked at one recently and surprisngly the price has gone down! (When does THAT ever happen?!) This is one that is similar to the one we have: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2402420

I have a bigger list of what NOT to get a 1 year old. We have had so many toys that have just sat and no one has played with them. OR they were just too young for them still. I know the age says 3 and up on this system, but as long as you put it up and down it's fine. Once they're 3 they can take it apart themselves. Good luck! A 1st birthday is so special!

Hi D.!
I have a mom owned business specializing in personalized gifts. I make all sorts of things but I do make personalized birthday shirts that are so cute! If you are looking for something inexpensive-I am the girl!
Maybe you would like to visit my site? www.jabstweettweet.etsy.com

Other easy ideas: write her a letter on her birthday every year and add to her baby book. Take a picture of you and her and start a birthday scrapbook of the two of you. Hope any or all of this helps!

Our son is the 26th grandchild on my husband's side and the baby on my side (the next oldest is 9!) We have benefitted from a TON of hand me down toys and books and knowing he was going to receive so many gifts for his birthday, we opted to make a deposit into his account. We figured this is a good thing for him now, and in the future and we could get away with it while he was still little and not missing a "gift" from mom and dad.
