Has anyone experienced a light-headed feeling and all over pins and needles sensation after taking fenugreek? Is this a normal reaction to the herb? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for your advice and kind words. I have not had any reaction to the fenugreek once I started taking it with a big glass of water and something in my stomach. Thanks again!!!

It shouldn't cause that reaction. Where did you purchase it? Go to the health food store or call them and discuss with one of the herbalists.

I didn't notice any side effects, but everyone's body handles things differently! Are you sure it's from that?

I've used Fenugreek while breastfeeding and still take it from time to time even though I'm no longer lactating. I've never experienced your symptoms.

Hi L.,

No, I've never heard of that and I took fen with both of my kids- the second time for about a year. I think I may have heard somewhere that fenugreek can interfere with blood sugar levels, so maybe you need to take it with food.

Here are some other herbs you could take if fenugreek isn't agreeing with you. I especially hear that shatavari is effective, though it might be harder to find.

Hi L.,

Not that I am aware, you might be having an allergic reaction, but my experience with fenugreek is MASS AMOUNTS of milk. But I also drank alot of water and happened to eat when I took it, so maybe..?

Good luck!

I have had plenty of fenugreek and never experienced it. Perhaps it is not a good herb for you. Are you taking it for nursing/milk supply? Try fennel instead.

It is not a normal reaction to taking the herb. You might be allergic to it.

L.,
I would say be very cautious. pins and needles sensation is called parathesia, and it could be signaling--and generally does mean an allergic reaction, if you are noticing this sensation anywhere on your face, lips, neck stop now if you are sure this is the fenugreek. Call your doctor or the local naturalist, herbalist or any health food store.
Your body is telling you that this does not suit it well, especially the light-headedness coupled with parathesia.
You do not want to become light-headed and then suddenly drop into anaphylactic shock,(allergic) or respiratory arrest. I hope this does not scare you, but is noteworthy at best. Always call your physician in light and spite of any info you get here or anywhere else when you are not sure. Please be careful.

Seek professional advice and hold off on the fenugreek until you get it. Remember, natural, synthetic or chemical things can cause reactions or raise histamines.
The best to ya!
Jen

I'm taking Fenugreek too - when I don't eat enough or drink enough water to make sure the amped up supply doesn't drain me of everything I'll get light headed too. I also take it with a FULL meal! and drink lots of water. For me I normally don't drink a lot of water - haven't liked it since it was a nausea trigger during pregnancy with our 1st of 3 boys ;), so taking 3-4 big glasses of water a day is huge! But if you're taking 2 at a time you might want to cut down to only 1 at a time 2 twice a day - it's all I have ever needed. I went from an almost A cup to a C overnight when I took 2 pills 3x's a day. So it might just be potent for you. You're already producing milk so just cut back - and every once in a while take a week break. Your supply will still continue you'll just not be so thirsty!

Good Luck!
Liz

Hi L.,

Fenugreek is a very safe herb but there have been cases of lightheadedness due to the fact that it can reduce blood glucose levels. That's a good thing if your diabetic :) ...but if not, too much can cause a hypoglycemic effect. My 91 year old dad is on it to keep his congestion down and he is also diabetic.... Some people say that there can be allergies to it but I personally believe that if your system is in good working order (strong immune system) you can't have allergies to anything natural. If your system is not strong, that may be the next step. My question to you would be why are you taking it...is it for milk production, brochial complaints, diabetes ???

To your question though, people have had that reaction. I personally wouldn't continue it until you determine if you really need it.

M.

Wow! I took it when I was nursing and had NO side effects. That sounds like an allergic reaction. I would quit taking it if I were you. Do you really find it's working to help you increase milk production anyway? I didn't see a difference and quit taking it when I ran out of it for that reason. I've heard there are other herbal supplements that help increase milk production (if that's why you're taking it). Unfortunately, I can't remember what they are. It's been 4 years since I breast fed. Sorry :). A lactation consultant should be able to tell you. Good luck!
