My son is 3 years old and about 2 weeks ago he came home from grandma's constantly just blinking his eye's, I don't know why he keeps doing this, it's almost like he is making himself blink, I don't know if I should be worried about this or not, should I call a Dr. who specializes in optometry?

What can I do next?

yes! Don't wait when it comes to the eyes. Even if it's nothing it will give you piece of mind and make sure that your son is okay.

Hi G.,

Maybe it's a little too simple to be the solution, but have you thought about asking him if his eyes are irritated or hurting? I would assume that a three year old could communicate his problem to you. My two year will tell me if something "hurts" when I'm concerned about certain reactions he has. If his eyes are hurting him, then take him to see a DR., if not, (if he doesn't respond or simply doesn't know what you're talking about, or pretends not to know what you're talking about), then it's just a phase. Anyhow, good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Yes, bring him to his pediatrician to check it out. My friend had the exact same thing, and found out that it was (don't know the exact spelling) ptyrgium? Anyways, it turned out to be somewhat common, but certain elements bother his eyes, and irritation causes a sort of film to grow on the white parts of his eyes. Sun, wind, sand, saltwater, etc. He has to wear sunglasses everytime he goes out to play. Not a huge lifechanging deal, but the only way to remove it is for a doctor to scrape it off. So now they are aware of it so they know to protect his eyes to keep it from getting worse. I think they also gave him some eye drops to help with the feeling that he has sand or something in his eyes. At least then you can rule out any physical reasons before you assume he is just doing it for fun or because he saw someone else do it.

I would defintely mention it to the Pediatrition. My nephew did the same thing around the same age and they ordered an EEG on him to rule out seizures. There are some seizures that can be in this form. It turned out fine and they decided it was just something he did. He's 6 now and I think he has grown out of it.

I don't know if you should see a doctor. I just have an experience to share. My 3 year old nephew began walking on his tippy toes while he stayed at his grandma's house. She didn't like it and insisted that he stop every time she saw him. I told her that he only does it when we're around and that he does it because he gets lots of attention (her telling him to stop). So I suggested she ignore it and it'll go away on its own. She stopped making a fuss over the tip-toeing and he stopped doing it. It kind of sounds like your liitle guy might be doing something similar. Maybe he saw someone blink a lot and tried it out. Then if his grandma made a big deal out of ... cha-ching... guaranteed attention. I hope this helps. If it doesn't go away soon, I'd call up his Dr. and just ask if he should come in.

Good luck.

My son went through an eye blinking phase when I was getting a divorce. It can definitely be a tic caused by anxiety. Does he do it more in certain sitautions? Have there been changes in his life? Is there something going on at grandma's that my have caused anxiety? Or it could indicate a phase that he will outgrow.
