Just curious as to what a "typical" day should look like, in terms of eating, for a 5 1/2 - almost 6 month old? My daughter is still getting up usually once in the middle of the night for a feeding, which I understand should stop soon. But when should she be getting cereal, fruits, vegetables, formula etc...? I started her on cereal at 4 months. She is now eating Stage 1 fruits and vegetables along with the cereal. I have a 3 year old as well and I just can't seem to remember how this all went!! Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have a ten month old and a 4 yr old and I forgot how the feeding went also. I started giving my 10 month old stage 2 (Baby food) when he was 6 months old. If you look on the jars of baby food they should tell you the recommended age to start feeding. Stage 2 says from about 6 months old and stage 3 says from about 8 months old. I think on some cereal boxs if you look on the back or on the said it gives you an idea of what they can eat and when you can start feeding it to them. Good Luck!!

You're doing fine, I'm sure, but typically baby would eat cereal 1-2x/ day (morning and evening), 1-2 fruit, 1-2 veg. So cereal and fruit for breakfast, and cereal and a fruit or veg for supper is good (but only a couple of Tbs of each is usually enough, although your baby may eat more or less). Formula is really nutritionally complete for a year, so even if she's "eating" once a day for now that's ok, too, as long as she is gaining weight and happy. Go with her cues. Formula usually totals *around* 32 oz for the day, including the night feeding. Could be more or less, again depending on your baby. As for when, feed formula on demand, and foods around the same time each day. It's your best bet.

I'm in the same boat. My son is going to be six months tomorrow and i'm always wondering the same thing. Right now he eats 3 teaspoons of oatmeal with a little fruit in the morning and I try to give him a fruit or a veggie in the evening but he doesn't always take it. I'm going to the doctors with him tomorrow for his six month check up and i'm going to ask him then. Let me know what you get for responses and I'll reply tomorrow with what I've heard.

Hi D.-
At this point, she should probably be getting cereal with a fruit in the a.m., cereal with a veggie for lunch and cereal w/ a fruit or veggie for dinner.

Check out the website homemadebabyfood.com I found this website extremely helpful. They have a feeding schedule you can follow depending on the age of your baby. It also has timelines about when you should introduce certain foods. Not to mention, if you decide to make your own baby food, it has a lot of recipes and instructions.

hi D.,

my 6 month old started solids at around 4 months, and now she generally sleeps 6:30-6:30 and then at 7 she has cereal, 8 she has 6 oz of formula, 11:30 a fruit or veggie, 12:30 a 6 oz bottle, 3ish a snack, either a 6 oz bottle or juice/water and some finger puffs, and then around 5 she has cereal, a fruit and either a meat or veg and then at 6 or 6:30 8 oz before bed. She eats the gerber level 2 foods and our doctor said we can start trying 3 or mashing up our dinner. anyway, she doing well...we separate the bottles and meals because she was spitting up a lot, but she's doing much better.

hope this helps!

Dear D.,

My daughter is 7 months old and has just started sleeping through the night (I knock on wood as I write this). At six months I began giving her a breakfast, lunch and dinner. She wakes up between 6:00 and 6:30 and I give her a bottle. About 8:30 she has her cereal and fruit. Between 12:00 and 1:00 I give her lunch, usually a fruit and vegetable plus a little formula. Around 3:00 she has her a "snack" of juice or formula. She eats dinner (fruit, vegetable and a small amount of cereal) when we eat which is usually around 5:30-5:45. I am going to soon begin meats. I then get her ready for bed and give her a bottle right before she goes to sleep around 7:00 p.m. I have found that if she has a full belly ( has eaten dinner and taken a full bottle before being put down), she sleeps through the night. I wish you and your baby a sound sleep!

My doctor told me to wait until 6 months to introduce fruits/veggies but it looks like a lot of people do it sooner. I have given him a little applesauce and peaches out of curiosity and it was fine. As I understand it, they should get cereal 2 times a day with either the fruits/veggies at the same time or given in between feedings. I would go for the former as it seems that although yummy, the fruits are naturally very sweet. Breastmilk/formula should be the primary form of nutrition though for the first year, don't fill her up with the cereal. Watch out for tummy trouble, spitting up, or irritability each time you introduce a new grain, this happens with my son, takes a couple days for him to adjust.

It sounds like your doing fine. Keep introducing new things little by little. I set my son up on a breakfast, lunch, dinner schedule. He got cereal at meal time and the rest of the time he got breastfed/formula.

Hi :) My son will be 6 months November 22, and right now he sleeps from about 7/730p- 6/630a and occasionally wakes up at 3 or so for a feeding. My son drinks about 6 ounces of formula at each feeding and he gets oatmeal cereal with a fruit for breakfast, sometimes a fruit or veggie for lunch, and cereal with a veggie for supper. Also: when u give cereal, dont give that PLUS a 6 oz bottle- make the 6 oz bottle and mix the cereal with that milk and let him finish off the rest of the bottle. But all babies are diff. not all are ready for solids at this age.. you'll know :) Good luck!
