Doctor Question

I don't go to the doctor very often except for Well Visits with Lab work. I think I may have a urinary tract infection. The last four I've had were diagnosed at my yearly visits. I don't have typical symptoms of a UTI but I'm starting to realize what my symptoms are. I don't have any stinging/buring sensation, no increased frequency to urinate, I can tell because it seems similar to the last time I was diagnosed and the time before that. My gynecologist has diagnosed me these past four times when they tested my urine for my yearly visit.and I have never been diagnosed by my general practitioner. I have started to realize that I probably have ongoing UTI problems (since I don't have text book symptoms) and would like a referral to a urologist. Who do I go visit to get a referral? The Doctor that has diagnosed the UTIs or my general practitioner. We have an Open Access Insurance plan so I could go see a urologist without the referral but would like to see which Urologists my Doctors feel are best.

What can I do next?

I would go to your OBGYN as they are the ones that find the infections. Either your general MD misses them or you don't have them when they check. I would go to the ones that know your history.
Some things that I was told by my OB after getting several back to back after my son was born was to drink more water. Make sure you don't wait too long to go pee. Drinking cranberry juice or eating fresh or dried cranberries. Make sure to go to the bathroom after sex (this one I'd not heard of before! But it was what actually got them to stop that particular time!) Don't use scented soaps or washes or douches, in fact you don't need douches at all. You don't want to use scented pads or tampons either. Cotton panties.
I used to get infections all the time and these things help.
Women tend to "fuss" a lot over their nether regions being under the impression that they are filthy and they are actually doing more harm to themselves for it then if they were to let things be, wash with a little good ol Ivory soap once in a while and water most of the time.
I hope you can get everything cleared up soon.

I would contact your primary care physician and ask who they would suggest. You could also ask your gynecologist and then compare who they tell you...pick one that is on both lists if possible.

I would ask your gyn for a referral. If they prefer you to see a general practicioner they will let you know.

Since you don't need a formal "referral", as in the documentation kind, then just call up both your doctor's offices and ask them who they would recommend. Then, if you see any repeated names, call that one.

see whatever dr your GYN recommends as they would know as they deal with the same general area of the body.Did they give you ideas on how to prevent them? I know drinking more fluids and adding in cranberry juice will help

After a terrible experience with a urologist in Allen, I went to Dr. Schoenvogel at Baylor Dallas. ###-###-####
If you have a recurring problem, I would highly recommend him. It can be a hassle to drive there. I take DART sometimes because the ticket is less than gas and parking. If you do that, you will have to walk a couple of blocks.

I would go with your gyn since they know your history. I think they often work together with urologists for women's issues.
Good luck and get well!
