Difficulty Pooping

My son is 15 mos old and we have been struggling to get him to poop regularly and comfortably. He will sometimes go for a week going just fine. And then he won't go for 2-3 days and have a miserable time going the next time. We have tried eliminating any binding foods from his diet and I think he drinks plenty of fluids. We tried prune juice and prunes but he won't take either. Any other suggestions?

We mixed prune and apple juice together, starting with more apple then prune and gradually reducing it to more prune than apple. In addition we also gave him pears every day.

Good luck!

When my daughter was that age (and even now - she is 25 months) sweet potatos always worked for her. I would just bake them and either cut them up or mash them. Having sweet potato every day really helped her.
Good luck.

hello H.,

My son had the same issue at about 15mths (he is now 3.5 yrs)...It was so bad that I would have to open his diapers b/c the poop was soo big. He would scream and sometimes bleed. I informed his doctor and I was given some medicine that dissolves in his drinks. It is tasteless. I then noticed that when he ate bananas that made it worse. I only gave him the medicine when I started to notice that his BM's were getting too hard b/c after a few days on the meds it got too loose. After a bit u know when to give it. I stopped the bananas or he has 1 every once in a while and I have not given him the meds in alm ost a year. I would keep doing what ur doing with the diet but u should probably call the doctor. My cousin had the same problem with her 5 yr old and when i told her what I used she called her doc and got it and the problem is now gone for her as well! Best of Luck!

I have heard plum juice is supposed to work like prune juice, but it isn't thick. My daughter doesn't like whole prunes, but still likes pureed prunes. The pediatrician recommended oatmeal, warm bath, exercise. And, we are also using Miralax.
Good luck,
J.

Our daughter got relief from apple juice or pear juice as hot/warm as she could stand it. The warmth seems to have an effect to start the BM's shortly after drinking a whole sippie cup full. With my second daughter we used very little Miralax (muhc less than the capful recommended, only about a teaspoon every morning) for a few weeks until the colon shrank back to normal size. From withholding it so long the colon actually stretches and that means she will not get the "urge" to go until it is full. Shrinking the colon with a few weeks of daily BM's means she will get the urge when there is less in her.
Good luck.

My friend who is very oganic uses gripe water for her daughter. Out mutual friend owns an organic baby store and recommends the same.
I do know flax seed oil can help. But not sure of the age they can intake something like that.
The DR's have suggested pediasure before but after looking on the bottles I wasn't impressed with the ingredients.

Our oldest daughter had this same problem. Our doctor told us to give her any type of juice that started with the letter "P" and to ONLY give her juice that starts with "P." Sounds like prune isn't working for you, but you could try pear or plum. Good luck!

while prune juice in our daughter's milk did help, she was constipated enough that our pedi put her on miralax. We mix it in her morning bottle and it works great.

Miralax! A godsend - no side effects, long or short term. I know exactly what you mean and it was awful to watch my daughter struggle so much. You have to find the right dose though so start small. For us it's a heaping 1/4 tsp once a day in her bottle. It's tastelss - you could put it in his yogurt or anything you are sure he will finish. Too much and he'll have too loose of poops, too little and he'll still struggle. My daughter still needs some help but I don't want to overdo it and have the other problem. Good luck!

It is horrible not to able to help your child when she is hurting. I could see my daugther's poop over there but she would get stuck half way could not get it out. I usually put her in to warm bath and before the poop got stuck up there get a Q -tip with dip it into olive oil and rub it inside her so it will help the poop to slip out. or try to put vaseline. After it is over make sure she does not eat a lot of rice, banana or dairy. raisins, grapes help if you give them consistently.

I am a fan of pear juice suggestions. But I wanted to add that diced pears can be a great help. I find regular helpings of diced pears kept my little guy regular at that age and still helps at 2.5.

H.,

My 13 month old is the same way, and he is so bad that we had to get prescription medication for his problems. However, the flax seed oil is absolutely an option the dose is 1 teaspoon per day for a child under 5. Our physician had us try that first and while it did help him go, it was hard to get him to take it. I can honestly say though that it hides really well in apple or orange juice. I didn't even notice the flavor and I was looking for it. The trick is to give it before food so that it has a chance to coat his little insides. Good luck and if that doesn't work the medication we have is Lactulose and it tastes really good, so good that I have never had any trouble getting him to take it.

Hi, my daughter has the same problem. She is 3. Her pediatrician told us to give her half a cap of Miralax everyday or as needed and that has helped alot! I didn't wanna buy the Miralax at first because it says for 16 years and up but she said they even use it in babies and it's completely safe. We don't need to use it everyday but I try to put it in her drinks every other day. Goodluck.

I worked at a rehab hospital that used the following all- natural bowel regime for constipated patients. You can check with your doctor to determine whether or not this regime is appropriate for your child.

mix together:

single serving of applesauce

single serving prune juice (the amt equivalent to a small V8 can)

single serving bran cereal (the kind that look like pellets)

start with a 30 cc serving in the a.m. He should start feeling better in a few days.

Mixture can be stored in the refrigerator up to 72 hours.

I've heard that pear juice is good for constipation and kids tend to like it better than prune. It's a more gentle solution so you may need to give more to keep him regular. Good luck!

Hello,
I have an 18 month old and when she was younger we had this same issue. Have you tried other juices such as pear juice or cherry juice? My daughter's doctor recommended those and they are very tasty. Also, cut up pieces of ripe pear and pear puree really help her to go. I hope this helps. Good luck!

We had this same problem with 2 of my three at about this age. We ended up giving them about 8oz of apple juice daily and it worked like a charm.
