Did You Make Your Own Baby Food?

I have been making my own food for my almost 5 month old with breastmilk so far and really enjoy it actually. I have only made potatoes, carrots, and squash so far. I was wondering if any of you that have made your own baby food have a great source for recipes such as a website or a baby cook book? The first stage foods are obviously simple, but as she gets older I would love to have a source to look up recipes.

What can I do next?

I ALWAYS used a manual baby food grinder. Just plop in what you are eating and grind away. We took it everywhere: restaurants, dinners at friends, church events, work events. I never bought baby food. My kids and husband loved it.

Hi A.,
I agree with the other Mom's who used wholesomebabyfood.com and I, too, used Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron as my food making bible. My son is 2 1/2 and I still use it for wonderful tips and resources on all types of food. I now use Deceptively Delicious by J. Seinfeld to "hide" veggies in my son's food with purees. She has wonderful recipes and more tips on roasting veggies, purees and food storage. My son now eats butternut squash by the spoonful because I enlist his help making the purees so don't think this all has to end when your child becomes a toddler. It's even more fun. I plan to make my daughter's foods, too. She's 3 1/2 months old. Good luck and enjoy! PS- One of my son's first foods after cereal was avocados and he still eats about 2 avocados a week... I would spoon it out of the skin when he was a baby but now he eats it chopped.

Hi A.,
I really liked The Petit Appetit Cookbook by Lisa Barnes. Very helpful. I also used Top 100 Baby Purees: 100 Quick and Easy Meals for a Healthy and Happy Baby by Annabel Karmel. Both are available on Amazon. My baby (now 25 months) ate absolutely everything I made for him, and I really enjoyed it too. Have fun!

that is the BEST website. ALSO I was in a BIG LOTS the other day they have drugstore closeout stuff for 75% off or possibly more. They had babyfood freezer trays as well as other items. I used that website then poured the babyfood in covered ice cube trays, once frozen, popped them out and put them in ziplock bags and labeled what was it was. When the baby was ready to eat, put one in the microwave for 10 seconds and mixed in fresh breast milk and served! I REALLY enjoyed making homemade baby food. Enjoy! and good luck!

Yes, I did make my own baby food. I also thought if was very rewarding. My oldest child is 21, so I hope this book is still available. I used recipes and ideas from the book Feed Me, I'm Yours. Even though my youngest is almost 14, I still use some of the recipes from this book for breakfast breads, etc. My children especially loved the bananna bread sticks. I had my own garden, so I steamed or baked the vegetables and then froze them in icecube trays to make a single serving for my babies. None of my children are especially picky eaters, and I attribute that to preparing their baby food. Good luck, and I am so excited to hear someone preparing their own baby food.

I also used www.wholesomebabyfoods.com. Good site. Lots of good information. I would make soups, applesauce, apricots, peaches, prunes, etc, along with different types of veggies. I would also puree cooked meats to add to the veggies.

Hi A.,

The best book ever, "Super Baby Food" by Ruth Yaron. You will absolutely love it!! It was literally my Baby Food Bible so to speak when my little ones were your baby's age.

It has great recipes for babies and toddlers and so much more!!

Enjoy!

the frozen veggies are super easy. Just steam them until they are soft, puree them up and put them in ice cube trays. But you should follow the rule of oranges first, then green, then fruit, then meat.

My daughter is now almost 10 months and she is working on the fingerfoods recommended at www.wholesomebabyfood.com. She loved their puree ideas and is now loving fingerfoods. The website is free! and has great information as well as recipes. It walks you through steps from picking out the food to getting baby eating it.

to help save time I would make a few things on Saturday nights and put them in ice cube trays in the freezer. Then on Sunday put them in big ziploc bags labeled in the freezer. It is so easy to take a small container with a an ice cube or two when you head out to dinner. no cooler needed as it will defrost in time for the little one to eat.

Have fun! And good luck!
