Diarrhea in Breastfed 4 Month Old

My 4 month old daughter has had diarrhea for over 3 wks, it took me awhile to identify since bf babies stool looks loose anyway. My doctor did a stool analysis for rotavirus and it came back negative. She asked me to stop my prenatal vitamin to r/o this. Could it be a food allergy to something in my diet? Anyone else have this experience? I do not see any blood in her stool, she has been having BM's about every 3 days, all loose. She is also tooting more.

Yes, in fact I would most certainly say food sensitivitt. I'd start an elimination diet, one of the biggest things that I didn't really realize that I was eating alot of but was causing my son trouble was onions. I had a bloomin' onion one night on my birthday (my first one in 3 years!) and the day after he had such bad diarrhea and I was like "What the heck?"

In any case, start with milk that is usually the biggest culprit (especially with gas), then continue to cut things based on elimination protocols you find online from reputable sources.

A nurse told me that if a baby has a food allergy, their bottom will be red wherever the poop touches their skin. If that's not the case, it could be a food sensitivity or intolerance. Is her poop yellow or dark green? If it's dark green, it could mean she's getting too much foremilk, I had that problem with both my kids. I had to start feeding on on breast only each feeding, so they would get more of the thick hindmilk. Foremilk is mostly water, and can lead to a lot of digestion issues. Good luck, I hope you get it figured out quickly!

It could be dairy so I would eliminate dairy from your diet for a month. I would avoid gassy foods like mushrooms, broccoli, and anything else that you know gives you a lot of gas. No spicy foods for a while too.

It could also be from teething.

Keep her hydrated and let her nurse on demand.

Commercially processed dairy is the #1 culprit for food allergies in breastfed babies. Limit your dairy by half and start buying organic milks, yogurts and cheeses. Make ice cream a true - and rare - treat for at least 3 weeks. You should notice an improvement if you've been consistent with limiting your dairy by the end of week 3.

The next most common ones are gluten, caffeine, eggs/cabbage/broccoli, and nuts.

If it turns out to be a food sensitivity.........eliminate only one thing at a time in your diet, so you can figure out which one it was. Otherwise, if you try too much at once, you won't know which one was the bad one. Also, you have to eliminate it for several weeks to be sure.

It is a long process and sometimes they outgrow it by the time you figure it out. My son got a blistering bleeding diaper rash from tomatoes, but started to outgrow it by the time we actually figured it out. lol Too bad that didn't happen to his allergy to diapers! ;)
