The BRAT diet. Hold back on the dairy until a few days after the diarrhea is gone. Watch the juice, to much can cause diarrhea, and possible water it down when you do give him juice. He needs the extra water right now anyway. Frequent baths may help the rash, light on the soap.

Hi L.,

I just went through the same thing with my son a week ago. I did the BRAT diet and gave him lots of bananas, rice, apples or applesauce and toast. He also had a very bad rash so I used Dr. Smith's ointment which cleared it up in a few days! I hope this helps. Good luck!

To add to the BRAT diet mentioned. Rice Milk, you can make or buy prepackaged, it works great. If old enough to eat solids, cooked carrots or yellow squash. Diarrhea stops immediately. The carrots and yellow squash were told to me by a French girlfriend. Rice milk from a German nanny. Babies need a couple of days to heal their digestive tract before you reintroduce milk.

My daughter had on going diarrhea when she was born and the doctor had me start adding probiotics to her diet. These are the friendly little bacteria that are in things like yogurt that help your body with the natural flora that needs to be in the intestines. When a baby has diarrhea, adults for that matter too, the natural bacteria gets washed away that help them absorb nutrients like they should which can cause more diarrhea. A ruthless cycle. The probiotics help with this process. You can get them from a pharmacy. Most carry it. It is over the counter but they keep them in the fridge behind their counter. Take one of the little packets and split the content into four servings. We would add this to one of her bottle at least 3 or 4 times a day. As soon as we started doing this she quickly got over her diarrhea and was a much happier baby. We were happy too since this was a natural choice vs. dosing her with drugs. If this is for your older son you can still give him the same thing just mix it into some water. Ask the pharmacist how much to use for which ever child your treating. It's great for adults too when they need it.

Good luck!

When my boys got diarrhea I would usually keep there bottom and privates covered in vasaline or if it got bad then I would a apply good thick diaper rash cream. But as long as I kept vasaline on them, it would keep them from getting a rash. Now for the diarrhea, my mother in law told me about this stuff called "Percy Medication". You can get it at walgreens, looks like a medicine bottle out of the 1950's. I gave them 1/2 teaspoon every hour for a couple of hours and that usually helped. I also watched there diet. Mostly toast, crackers, potatoes, banannas, etc. Should stay away from juice and milk when they have it.

Buy some juice that has bananas in it, or add it in yourself to some apple juice. (Both banana and apple juice can stop you up.) If it is the 2 week old, then lay him on a bunch of towels, tummy down and let his bottom air out when he's sleeping. When he messes - just wash the towels - adding vinegar to the rinse to disinfect. Putting an open diaper under him should help control the mess. The creams can upset the rash and be painful. I found the old A&D ointment (which is lanolin) isn't as sticky, but it isn't painful and protects when the diaper is on. For the older children - adjust the above mentionings. BRAT - Bananas, Rice, Applesauce (no sugar), Toast/crackers. Jello is also easy on the stomach. If you strictly follow that diet, it will help tremendously. So will probiotics - there are age appropriate probiotics out there (chewable, drops, etc.). Make sure you are giving fluids to avoid dehydration.

Hi L., You don't want to stop giving him juice, you should stop giving him milk. All other liquids help keep him from becoming dehydrated. Push liquids such as juices, water, pedialyte to help him stay hydrated. milk actually encourages the diarreah. Check with your doctor or a pharmasist.

Everyone suggesting the BRAT diet is absolutely correct. It is the only advice doctors and the Ask-A-Nurse hot line will give. Absolutely no juice is advised because they are actually better for constipation and the apples should be of the red variety as the yellow or green type are more acidic and not compatible for diarrhea. Good luck.

Is he on antibiotics? They do tend to cause yeast infections on bottoms. It usually is angry red and sometimes has a raw, welty look to it. Diaper rash cream and wipes seem to cause them pain if its a yeast infection.

Hello! I am not a mom, but I do take care of many children! For the rash you should use "calmoseptine". It is a diaper rash ointment that you have to ask for behind the counter at CVS. I have used this on kids with severe diaper rashes due to diarrhea with medical problems. Clean the area with water, pat dry and then apply the calmoseptine. It works great!! As for the diarrhea, as long as he's drinking lots he should be okay. Encourage pedialyte or any other electrolyte solution. If he becomes dehydrated, not drinking, no tears, no wet diapers over 8 hours, take him to the ER for rehdydration. Also, keep in mind that if he has diarrhea, theres a good chance everyone will get it.... Good handwashing is the best! God bless you and your family!

A week is kinda long to have diarrhea. Not sure on the age of your son. If it is the 2 week or the 20 month I would take them to the doctor. The four yr old I would call the doctor and ask if there is anything he can take over the counter. Good luck. Sorry one of your isnt feeling well.

Try the BRAT (Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) diet and no juice, fruit, high fiber or high fat foods for a while. You need to allow his digestive system to calm a little and these foods will just aggrevate it more. After a couple of days of normal BM's, you can give him all of the old foods again. No juice, fruit, beans, peanut butter, bran, oatmeal, etc. Just stick to bland foods like white bread, white rice, plain yogurt, bananas, crackers, low fat soups, etc. Hope he feels better soon.

Try upping his fiber intake. If he is not big on eating vegitables and the like look for either the invisible stuff you mix in or our household favorites are the Mrs. Freshly's Snack Away snacks. They are increadibly high in fiber and low in fat and sugar. They have twinkie type snacks and "cream filled" chocolate cupcakes.
The other thing in try making some special time for that little guy. You didn't specify which one of your boys is having the problem. If it is the oldest he may be feeling pushed aside for the two new ones, and if it is the middle one, he may not quite get the new baby thing. My son had problems with vomiting and diarrhea around that age when my husband took a job on the road. His anxiety levels rose giving him an upset stomache. Once we figured out that he was worried about daddy we found ways to assage those feelings and the tummy trouble cleared right up.
I hope some of this helps.
Good Luck!

Hi L.,

Still has diarrhea, BRATS diet is good but bananas and applesauce to much is not. Water is good to flush the system of to much acid build up. Watch out for to much bread esp. white, use honey wheat bread or some wheat saltines. For the rash warm bath will soothe, if it swollen, tender and real red, let it air dry, use destine and cornstarch after drying. Water is always the best for diarrhea and then a little gatorade. Good luck.

It sounds like a good bacteria needs to be introduced. I would try yogurt in the Am with breakfast and Pm after dinner until you see that the diarrhea has stopped. And no fruit till he is back to normal. Hope this helps.

Unfortuneately you didn't specify how old your son is or if there's anything else going on. You can give gatorate mixture 1 part gartorade to parts water. Pedialyte or plain old water. Depending on how old he is it may be from teething and will go away shortly. If it's some kind of sick you may want to take him to the doctor.

Did you know that most of your immune system is in your digestive tract? In addition to the BRAT diet you should get him so yogurt that had all the good stuff in it to help with your digestion (like Activia.) I think they even have some just for kids (if not in the yogurt aisle try the organic dairy section.) this will help with the diaper rash too (you can even put some on his bottom!!)

Put him on a BRATS diet & no dairy. Boudreaux butt paste helps too- put it on really thick and change diapers often and air out when ever is possible. If his rash is really bad you may need to get an RX from your doctor. Good luck!

Stop giving him milk/dairy and cheese. See if that clears it up. He may have developed a slight allergy to cow's milk products, common to occur in young toddlers.

I'm sure someone else has already suggested this as I haven't scrolled down to read the responses. How old is your son? If he is an infant, he may have rotovirus. I would seek out your pediatrician. If he's older, then you may just want to try rice cereal to help stop him up some.
hope that helps,
jen

If your son has had diarrhea for a week then I would suggest that you take him to the doctor. You do not want to run the risk of dehydration. My son spent three days in the hospital for dehydration in May of this year. A trip to the doctor is a lot cheaper than a stay in the hospital. Plus, you do not want your son to feel sick any longer than he has to.

I agree with the BRAT diet...Make sure you are using applesauce and not straight apples or juice. One doctor even said to use Carrots(I am thinking baby food type, not carrot sticks) making it the BRACT diet.

PLEASE watch for signs of dehydration. It can come on suddenly and be REALLY harmful!

Hi L.,

Have you tried rice water? Boil some rice in water, then put it in te blender and liquify it. Pass the water through a collander and you can put soe sugar for flavor or corn syrup. This will help stop the diarrhea.

Good Luck
