Have you guys heard about the explosion and China at the daiper manufactor? They are saying there is possibly going to be either a shortage or price increase do you guys think this is going to really happen. My husband called me and said I need to go to the store ASAP and stock up and I'm just wondering if I really should or just whatever. I couldn't help but laugh a little at him you know him being the man and panicking over our daughters diapers. I thought it was kinda of cute but like I said I am also on the fence about it to. After all diapers aren't cheap anyways and well babies do need them and I'm not sure I can go the cloth way.
I had to look that up. According to the report from ABC (Diane Sawyer etc) the plant in Japan had the explosion and those in China would be most affected. It also said the plant produces 20% of the world's share of Acrylic Acid with US and Germany being the biggest producers. Maybe the price will go up but I don't plan to rush out to get more diapers. It didn;t really sound like it would be a huge issue.
My SIL order's all her diapers from Amazon... she's a total bargin shopper and swears it is cheaper.
If my kids were still in diapers - I'd be stocking up.
It was a chemical manufacturer that blew up and they supply chemicals that are used in diapers (for absorption). I would just start using seventh generation diapers or other brands that do not contain the chemicals or switch to cloth.
The explosion wasn't at an actual diaper manufacturing plant, the plant manufactures acrylic acid, used in making a resin that is a component of disposable diapers. Because the plant will not be able to supply the makers of Pampers, Huggies, etc., for awhile, the shorter supply may cause other plants to charge diaper makers more for their product, who most definitely would then charge consumers more. It's the same principle as when an oil refinery burns or explodes...less supply = high prices on gas, in this case it's diapers and pull-ups. And in the case of the Richmond, CA refinery fire not too long ago some gas stations raised their prices immediately upon hearing of the fire, which hopefully hasn't happened yet with diapers.
If we were still using diapers I would probably double up on my purchases, continue to use coupons and shop sales (Target does a deal about once a month where you buy two large boxes already at good prices and you receive a Target gift card for $10 on top of it, plus you can still use any coupons you have) and prepare for early potty training by educating myself on readiness signs and methods now, before I needed them.

FYI, the very best deals I found were on Amazon. Sign up for Amazon Mom and Subscribe & Save. There are onsite coupons to "clip" at times, and free shipping with orders over $25 or Amazon Prime, the price per diaper is truly lower then anywhere else, I even found this to be true when comparing their prices to store brands.
It didn't sound like it would be a huge issue to me.
We are in the plastics industry (raw materials) and my concern would be due to the diapers being produced in China vs the US. I know from experience with our products, that the US has a much closer watch on product that other countries.... Which is WHY diapers made here are pricier.
We go through testing for FDA, etc for anything that is consumed or on the body.

I would probably start spending more time getting coupons and calling diaper companies and asking them for coupons. Buy when you know they're on sale. I doubt there will be a shortage, per se, but prices will probably increase slightly for a while.
in a pinch a flour sack works wonders. If they go up in price it would only be the cost of tax to import them from somewhere else. Like a few dollars. So maybe time to change brands or just save some money for diapers instead of something else. Coupons, and sales are great!
