HI everyone!!
I am worried about this new crib recall. I have a 10 year old crib that we used with my first son that was passed down to us and we are now using it for my new baby. We never had a problem with it, but it IS a drop side. It is from pottery barn and is a sleigh crib not the trindle one that has been recalled from there. I haven't found any information on this crib that it has been recalled but I saw on the news that they are going to eventually recall all drop side cribs? What do you other moms think? Should I buy a new stationary crib? How do I know for sure if the crib I am using is safe?

What can I do next?

For me, I feel like these companys lie to us and try to scare us into buying new products like cribs, strollers, highchairs, and so on. I think that they do that so that they can make $. I mean is it true that every freaken product for babies are all wrong and that we must all buy all new stuff! Yea, right.

But

On the other hand, if we don't listen to them, are we bad parents that do not care about our children. Are we willing to allow something bad to happen to our beautiful babies?

What do we do?

Only you and your husband can make this decision. I wish you both the best and congrat's on your beautiful little baby.

God bless.

Our crib was also a drop side, not recalled - I kept using it. I actually sold it afterwards and the new owners were not worried about it either.

I agree that of course it is very, very tragic and unfortunate if a young child experiences an injury or even death, however, there are millions and millions of these cribs out there and as far as I know a handful of children were injured.
It is good, if design revisions can prevent these injuries, but a child is probably more likely to be struck by lightning than being injured by a crib (that wasn't even recalled).
That was my thought when deciding on whether to keep using it...

If the model you have wasn't recalled and the crib is in good condition, I wouldn't get too anxious about it. Just keep watching the recalls, just in case.
If you feel that the crib is too old, not in god shape and can afford a new one, go for it.

The crib my son slept in during his first 18 months was recalled. We were lucky it was recalled when we were already transitioning our son to a toddler bed (I was pregnant and the idea was to have the crib for the new baby).
We followed the directions from the manufacturer's website (we had to ship the label or a picture of it as well as some key screws or small pieces to make it impossible to be a crib again). They send us a voucher to be used in Baby R Us an a couple of other outlets for much more than the crib actually costed us and we could afford a beautiful new crib for our daughter.
You are familiar with this crib, as you used it with your son. Follow your instincts.

I would call Pottery Barn and speak to them about it. If it is not the kind that is recalled, it is presumed safe for now. The reason they may stop making drop side cribs is that because of all the recalls, they now appear to be more dangerous than the stationary side ones. I personally would not ever buy a drop side crib. Any time you have moving parts, you have possibility of those parts failing. If you have done any reading on the recalls, you know that the hardware seems to break and malfunction. My guess is that a 10 yr old crib would be a lot more likely to malfunction, especially if it has been exposed to changing temperatures in storage. I would look at that as a danger, and if you are in any position to buy a new crib, I would. I guess as of now it would be considered perfectly safe, but I don't think I would be willing to take the risk myself. I bought a stationary sided crib before all of these crazy recalls for just that reason, and I am so glad I did now. The stationary sides are definitely a pain in the butt for a very short person like me, but I managed. (And I am SHORT- I have to use step stools for everything, and can't reach things because my arms and torso are too short)
