Crafty/sewing moms...zipper Question...

I have a very nice Ann Klein coat. However the zipper slide broke off it. I already contacted them, and sent them the coat, only to have it returned and told they no longer carry that zipper and wouldn't replace it with another for me.

Now I am desperately trying to find a 25 inch zipper that's similar to what's on the pockets. It has black fabric on the sides, and black teeth - to match the black coat, however the metal is the tricky part. It's not "normal" it's a shiny, metallic finish that's like a charcoal grey...I can't find it anywhere. I don't know the name of this color! It's definitely unique.

HELP!

What can I do next?

I think that a high end alterations place could do it. or you could go to Hancocks or Joanns & get a list of seamstresses. Call them & see what they can offer. Best of luck to you.

Cant you replace it with a different zipper that is just black? Solid black coat/separating zippers are easy to find in a fabric store. And if you cant replace it yourself, a dry cleaners shop might be able to, or ask at Joanns if they can recommend someone who sews and can replace it for you. But, a black zipper is normal, and it doesnt have to match the pockets zippers.

If you can't find a 25" zipper similar enough, why not replace all 3 zippers so they match?

Is the zipper slide broken and are there teeth missing from the zipper? If not, it may be possible to repair. You might try it yourself or ask at a shoe repair shop (find one that's high end and clean), or an upholsterer. I've bought specialty zippers before, heavy duty for luggage and sleeping bags. They were sold by the foot and they cut and clamped the bottom to make it the length you need. You can always check online for custom zippers.

Try a place that does alterations. There is also a website, zipperstop.com that sells a variet of zippers. maybe if you email them and ask possibly sending a picture of the zipper. If you still have the zipper slide, it might have the company name on it somewhere which could atleast help you possibly find a slide that works. There is also websites that carry zipper repair kits (google zipper repair kit). Sorry, spewing out ideas, hoping one will help.

Why not put a different zipper on? You aren't going to find the exact zipper the designer used, but you might find one that will look nice with it.

Have you checked Jo-Ann's they have lots of zippers you aren't going to be able to find an exact match but you should be able to get close.

There are people who sew at flea markets. I know that might sound unusual, however they appear to do a good job and might have some of the unusual thing you need. Check out your flea markets somewhere near, and you might have to wait, walk around see something different! Never know. Just a thought.
