allergies could be the answer - I give my grandson OTC claritin or zyrtec and it stops the runny nose which alleviates the cough.

Asthma.

I would see a Specialist. Have your Pediatrician refer you to one.

I have Asthma. It can be triggered by many things. Each person being different. Exercise, can trigger it as well. In some.

This has been going on for 2 years.
Time to see a Specialist.

OR, is anything wrong with his Sinuses?
Post-nasal drip can also cause, coughing. Which originates from the throat.
Per Asthma, the coughing originates from the lungs.

sounds like asthma and allergies. They often go together.

Sounds like allergies. Ask your doctor. Expect that he MAY have to take allergy medication daily during certain times of the year. Runny nose and coughing at night may be sinus drainage. Short-term fix, just to make him comfortable, not to solve the problem, prop him up pillows at night, use a humidifier in his room.

Neti Pot!! See youtube.com for many videos on how to use one. Dr. Oz on Oprah recommended using it everyday to wash away allergens from nose and sinuses. Please suggest to the mother of this boy to remove old stuffed toys and pillows from his bedroom. Wash his bedding in super-hot water every week. Many kids are allergic to the stuff that microscopic dust mites EXCRETE! - - and dust mites are everywhere - - even in everyone's eyelashes! YUCK, but unavoidable. The neti pot would take care of any allergens WITHOUT the side-effects and the cost $$$ of medications. Also, temporarily remove any pets - cats, dogs, bunnies, guinea pigs, etc. and see if that doesn't improve his sinus drainage. It's the DRAINAGE running down the back of his throat that may be causing him to cough. NOTE: When using NETI POT, the water must be body temperature or else it will feel uncomfortable. And don't use table salt!! They add stuff to make it not stick. I recommend adding 1/2 tsp. of REAL SALT to the warm water. It is a brand of sea salt from an ancient sea in Utah, protected underground from modern pollution. It is pink.

When I was younger I had the same problem and was told I had exercise induced asthma. I needed to take an inhaler before I ran. Since then I have been receiving allergy treatment (shots and meds) and no longer have this problem. If you can get his allergies undercontrol than the cough will more than likely go away on its own. Today I can run without needing an inhaler before or after.

Ask the doctor about asthma treatments such as a nebulizer. My son has severe asthma and it begins with uncontrollable coughing, that gets harsher and drier. And it is worse at night when he lays down because of the position his lungs are in.

There is also a narcotic cough medicine that is very dangerous but on occasion the doctor would give to us so he could rest at night instead of coughing all night since rest is vital to getting better.

Good luck.

It happened to my son too. The school recommended I take him to an allergy specialist. Boy were they right on the money. He's allergic to almost everything ;-))) and this induces asthma. Also, I don't allow him milk from the cow. It cause the mucus to really build. I had tonpurchase over $400 dollars in asthma meds. But after reading all the fine print I opted for a natural remedy. We use apple cider vinegar, honey, and apple juice combo to get rid of that night time coughing and wheezing. We do it daily and he barely shows any symptoms of asthma. Good luck with your son.
