Men are much more prone to color blindness than women and even at that red/green color blindness is more common than overall colorblindness. (PS- I think EVERY mother worries at that age about color blindness...I know I did!!)

I'd 'test' her not with words, but with matching and/or pointing, especially where she can chose between red and green items. Hold a red and green crayon and ask her to point to the green one, as an example. If she can pick the green one from the red, I think you are good to go and no worries needed.

My daughter was slower to learn her colors than her brother was. I got her the Baby Van Gogh video (from Baby Einstein)and that seemed to help. Within a few weeks, she had all the colors down pretty well.

I went through the exact same thing with my daughter when she was 3. She wouldn't identify blue, red or any of the primary colors. Her doctor told me not to worry, I even consulted a friend of mine that is a therapist. She said not to worry. I just continued to use flash cards even when she didn't respond. To my surprise .....(I was volunteering at her preschool)...She was called on to say the colors as her teacher pointed to them.......SHE DIDN'T MISS ONE! ....SHE DIDN'T EVEN HESITATE....She got a higher evaluation score than her older sister (who knew her colors at 2 and her alphabet). So go over them until you are blue... But unless the doctor says there is reason to be concerned.

women are RARELY color blind. While women carry the gene for colorblindness, it is generally only men who are colorblind. Don't worry, she may be more of a shape person than color. She is only 2.5. I wouldn't sweat it.

My daughter played coy for a long time. My husband and I worried she might be color blind. Especially since me and my son are. It turns out she doesn't like quizes but loves the attention she gets when she answers them wrong. One day I handed the colors book to my son and he asked her. She got them all right. Silly girl!

I had the same with my daughter, I too thought maybe she was color blind, found out much later in her life that color recognition is developmental and it was slow in developing in my daughter. One day between the ages of 21/2 and 3 she finally got it though. I was amazed.

She sounds REALLY smart and well-educated for 2-1/2! Don't 'push' her education. Keep it fun even if you DO have to be repetitive sometimes. Associate green with grass (say 'it's green, like grass'). Red with firetruck, yellow with the sun, and blue with the sky. She'll get it. Many kids don't learn colors til 4 or 5 yrs old and they exist quite happily in the world! LOL

I would just give it a little more time & practice before you call the doctor. My son just turned 3 in October & I had the same problem with him. He could remember some of the colors, but almost always got red, blue, & yellow wrong. I really thought that he might be color blind too. He always learned so fast with other areas, i.e. letters & numbers. He did finally catch on though & now he's a pro with his colors. I'm not sure why, it just took him longer to learn his colors. Just keep practicing, I'm sure she'll catch on soon.

I don't know if a doctor would even test them at this age. Color blindness in girls is very rare but it can happen. My sons are color blind & they have problems with green vs brown, blue vs purple, and my youngest oddly sees pink when it's gray. She's also young, most kids will struggle with colors at that age. I would just keep working with her, without pressure, but I don't think you anything to worry about. Of course, as a Mom, if in doubt, call the doc. Best of luck to you.

S.,

I wouldn't worry too much about it at this age. She is still learning them. I would just keep practicing the colors with her until she gets them. By the way, color blindness usually affects boys so it's highly unlikely that your daughter has it.

My younger son actually IS colour blind, but the pediatrician didn't test him for it until he was about 5. He said it usually takes that long for kids to develop colour recognition and to be able to respond to the test in a reliable way. Don't worry about it for now, even if she is colour blind it's not that big a deal, but chances are she is not.

S., Girls are not color-blind, so don't worry about that. Also remember that she is 2 1/2 so she is not slow either. Nothing to worry about. She just doesn't care about learning her colors yet. As long as she knows them when she is in kindergarten she will be fine. If you let the little things bother you, you won't survive parenthood. Don't let anyone tell you any different~~Best wishes!!

I have run into this with other children. If she can tell the difference between black and brown likely she is not color blind. Sounds like you need to give her a good reason to learn her colors. Try M&M's. Ask her what color she wants then have her point to it and if she gets it right she can have that M&M. It works like a charm. After that she will learn that knowing your colors will help her get the things she wants by explaining them by color. Let's face it we all like to get our way.

Girls carry the trait for color blindness but cannot actually be colorblind themselves. Thats left to boys! Colors can be a really difficult concept for kids. I wouldnt worry about it now.

OOps! Looks like girls can be but only if their father is as well and their mother has to be a carrier. I still wouldnt worry!
