Cloth Diapers for Older Baby

Hi everyone! I have a great 14 month old daughter who has used Bum Genius one size diapers and we love them. However, they are already starting to get too small. It says that it fits up to 35 pounds- NO WAY! My daughter is not huge- weighs about 21-22 pounds and fits 18 month clothing. The Bum Genius are already a little snug on her thighs and a little too short in length- waist size is OK.

Any suggestions on larger cloth diapers to take us through to potty training? Let me know what you liked or didn't like.
Thanks for the help!

Hi Leah,
We've used Fuzzi Bunz since my little guy was born. We have small, med, and large. He's been in the large for a LONG time, and will definitely be able to wear them until he is potty trained. He is now 2, but has definitely been wearing them since he was around 16-18 months, and could have worn them sooner. The Fuzzi Bunz have many snaps so they are very adjustable to size. We love them!
Good luck,
Amy K

Hi there,

My son is also 14 months old (dob 12/27/08) and he has pretty much outgrown his "one size" Happy Heiny diapers, so I would say stay away from that brand. He is on the last row of snaps lengthwise. He has always been big, like the 90th percentile for height and weight. Right now, he weighs around 30 lbs.

I don't know if you are open to diapers other than the "one size", but I love-love-love using simple prefolds with a Bummi's Super Whisper Wrap cover. My son is only on the size medium covers, and he has LOTS of room left in them. We have some size large covers, but he swims in them and we only use them in emergencies right now.

We don't do any fancy folding with the prefolds. We just fold them in half lengthwise, and slide them into the little pocket at the front of the Bummi's.

Bummi's are not the cheapest covers out there, but they will last through many babies! I bought almost all my Bummi's off of Craigslist, and I will be able to sell them again once my kids are done with them.

I would include a link to Bummi's, but every time I add a URL, my posting gets flagged for solicitation! (LOL) So just google it. Let me know if you need any help. Thanks.

Good luck!

I have a little 20 month old daughter (23 pounds), and we use kiss-a-luvs fitted diapers. I love them! Have used them since she was a newborn (size 0 and 1).

The work great.

My daughter is nearly the same age and size of yours. She has had only one size of diaper thus far and I think it will be the last set she will need. I bought mine from a WAHM in Minneapolis who hand makes the diapers. I think they are much nicer than the commercial ones and have really stood up to everything thus far, including overnights. They are also much cheaper. Check out Amy with www.TwigAndVine.com My daughter was chunky at 8 months when we bought the size large and has actually slimmed down now that she is cruising. I fit her in them at the tightest closure with plenty of room to grow. And, I may add that she has some thunder thighs! :)

Good luck!

My son will be 14 months in a couple days. He is about 32 inches tall (and maybe 20 lbs, and wearing 18 month clothes or 24 month clothes). The bumGenius is still fitting pretty well. He has been on the largest setting since about 6 months because he is so tall. I really don't know how long they will last, though, since the rise might get too small. I also cloth diapered my older son until 2 months before he turned 4 (when he FINALLY potty trained). He couldn't wear the BG. I found that wonderoos/wonderworks, large old style pocket change (I don't know about new style, I haven't tried them), and large happy heiny fit him really well. I have also heard that fuzzibunz run A LOT bigger. Some of my friends kids are the same age as my baby (but chubbier) and they are just barely fitting in mediums! So those would definitely fit (not sure which you should try, large or medium). I make my own cloth diapers now so thats what I will use when my baby outgrows his current diapers (I made half his current stash too).

We had the same problem, except my DD was only 5 mths old (23 lbs) We switched to Whamies OS. They have s hooks which take a little getting use to but are completely toddler proof for that reason. She is now 1. mths and has thined out a little bit and does kind of fit in her BG 3.0 bot I much prefer the Whamies she is not ecen to the top snap. (there are 4 os snaps) These are what a mom suggested to me on Diaper Swappers for a large baby. I was able to find tyhem at Diaper Shop .com I think? Dood Luck!

I bought some Green Acre Diapers that I've used on my sixteen month old for six months now. We LOVE them! They are fleeced lined and have liners that fit inside easily. Very easy to shake the poo off up with little or no scrubbing in the toilet. They come in small medium large, according to weight, I think we have the large. We already buckle them and have him step into them (he hates to be on his back). That's one thing I like is as your kid potty trains they can be adjusted a little looser wherever needed to be able to be pulled up and down like undies. The inserts have a seem leaving little flaps that can be flipped inward to give extra absorption where you need it, or just left flat, which will be trimmer for potty training. Have fun choosing, I definitely recommend checking these out!

I use fuzzi bunz and really love them. I started using them when my oldest was 16 months and 35lbs. They have different sizes, plus each size has room for adjustments. I bought a smaller size to use on my newborn too.

At around the same age as your little one is now, we switched my daughter to Crickett's diapers with Thirsties covers. The Crickett's diapers are very high quality. They are by far the most absorbant cloth diaper I have tried which is a very important factor for our little super soaker! They have snaps with multiple settings and will for sure last through potty training (size and durability). They all come with a removable doubler (attaches with snaps) which is a nice bonus. The only con is that they aren't the softest diaper out there once they've been washed a few times but that hasn't seemed to bother my daughter. I prefer Thirsties covers because they don't leak. They have the leg "gussets" but they aren't the super tight ones that can cause red marks on your little one's thighs.

Leah - I had similar concerns. My son went to the largest adjustment on the Bum Genius One-Size when he was only 6 months old. I figured there was no way he was going to make it to potty training. And he's not there yet, but he has really started to lengthen instead of grow in girth. I'm surprised that the one-size still fit! Maybe due to walking/cruising?

We did get some Kissaluvs (size 2) and Bum Genius (size L) fitted diapers and they fit great. You do need covers for those, btw. Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is you could try getting some more larger diapers, but I would wait a little bit before buying a whole bunch. The one-size may end up fitting longer than you expect. Good luck!
