Cloth Diaper Question - Washington,MI

I have been CDing for about a month now and really like it. My question is why do people use pocket diapers? Prefolds (or fitteds) make sense to me because I can use the cover a few times before it needs to be washed. But a pocket (or AIO) needs to be washed right after one use. Am I missing something about pockets? Thanks.

What can I do next?

I have both pockets and prefolds. The pockets are easier for others to use/daycare. They also seem to hold more than a solo prefold as munchkins get bigger. Re-stuffing the pocket after washer drives me nuts. Otherwise, I've been very happy using both types.

What you are missing is what happens when your baby starts to move around. I have been cloth diapering for 14 months now and proud to say my daughter has never worn a paper diaper. I used prefolds for the first three months then she learned to roll over and they started to leak and she was rolling over during diaper changes which made it almost impossible to put a prefold on her then secure it with the clips then put the cover on...it was like putting on 2 diapers and when your baby is rolling over and screaming when you roll her back over and fighting you then you need the diaper change to be quick and easy...this is the point when most people give up cloth diapers and go to disposables...i now use bumgenius all in ones...i have 20 total, 10 are sewn together and 10 are pocket...the beauty of the all in one is that it is put on just as quickly as a disposable...i love my diapers and with 20 at 3 months i washed diapers every other day and now it's only twice a week....plus the bumgenius that i use are one size so they adjust and will last until she is potty trained...we never have leaks and have found that cloth diapering is very easy for us...just make sure you follow the wash instructions EXACTLY or they will leak or cause diaper rash....hope this helps :) also the difference between pocket (the kind you stuff a liner into) and sewn together (the kind where the absorbent line is not detachable) is the the pocket dry twice as fast but have to be stuffed each time and the sewn-ins are easy to launder (no stuffing and separating) but take a long time to dry...i like having 10 of each....so I don't have to stuff 20 but also can have some pocket one dry very quickly if i get down to only one clean diaper...

I don't put anything in the pocket. I like them because they are just as easy as disposables without the negatives. I can change a diaper with those in just a few seconds.

I have/use both and now that my little one is potty training the pocket diapers are easier to get on and off her when we are out and about, they are more convenient, less bulk to carry when we are out, can add less fluff to her booty, and we use them at night ( I use a couple of hemp doublers and a microfiber insert).

If I had it to do over I would have gone with all one-size pockets/aios

I use a combo of BG 3.0s and and prefolds w/covers. I have 2 babies in diapers - a 2.5 yr old (use BG on him mostly) and a 10 month old (use prefolds on him mostly).
I love the pockets for the adjustable and super absorbancy - as they get older, they don't have to be changed as often (especially if they are "regular" when it comes to #2).
Plus for me, in colder months, pockets cut my drying time in half or more. When I dry prefolds, it takes me at least 2 cycles through my dryer(or they hang on the drying rack for a day or two before fully dry); with pocket inserts it takes me only a 1/2 to 3/4 of a dryer cycle.
My babies also sleep longer with pockets on, mostly b/c I think they can't feel as much of the wetness.
BG are also more "Daddy" and "Other Caregiver" friendly for our family!

i only use the bum genius one size, they are pockets. i got them because they were one size and i wouldn't have to buy more sizes as my daughter grows. it's the only kind i've tried so i don't have anything to compare to. i also don't have to buy covers. i like them, but like i said i don't have anything to compare to.

I'm not sure either. I prefer prefolds. I think that it's almost a waste of money just because you can use it once per wash. But all in all it's less of a waste than disposables. I do love AIO for when my family watches my son.

i am going to be using cloth on my second, and i find that they are a lot easier to use. I was able to get my husband on board, because it's just like a normal diaper. i can wash and stuff them and they are on the shelf ready to be used. So he doesn't have to worry about anything else. He just puts the diaper on, like he did with our first, and it's done.

I like them as well, that if i need to use a prefold i can do that, and use the pocket diaper as the wrap. yes i may still have to wash the wrap, but i can always use a prefold and the pocket and make it extra absorbant.

I use both prefolds and pockets. I love pocket diapers for their absorbency. We use pocket diapers for a nighttime diaper. My son can go 10-12 hours in his diaper with no leaks. I also use them when we are running errands and he might need to be in a diaper a little longer then usual. As my son gets older (14 months now) I find I have to change him more with prefolds. He's drinking a lot of water now and the prefolds aren't as absorbent as pockets. We still use prefolds mostly during the days and just change him more often. When I leave him at either Grandparents house, they prefer me to bring pocket diapers. They are more user friendly, for people who don't prefer to cloth diaper.

No.

We did a pocket diaper with our first primarily because my husband wasn't totally on board and they were very easy for him.

We now use a prefold with wool for number two.

Pocket are easier than wool covers in that you just launder and done whereas wool needs to be lanolized periodically and dried. The pockets we used where one size fits all and they did, so I didn't have to buy anything else, whereas I have had to buy new wool covers and prefolds as my son grows.

I think it's just preference.

Hi,
I had to laugh when I read your post, sounds just like me when I saw a pocket diaper for the first time.
I had used prefolds with my older daughter, 12 years later when her sister came along I had no idea the new varieties of cloth diapers available. I was given a Fuzzi Bunz as a gift, I thought it was cute but I was very confused. I had never even heard of a pocket diaper so I thought it was a silly design for a cover since it had to be washed after each use. I went onto their website to learn about pocket diapers.
I like prefolds and covers for the reason you mention and also because the diaper can be used for years as a cleaning cloth when diapering days are done.
I do see the appeal of the AIO's and Pocket Diapers now though. 1) The microfleece lining feels drier to the touch since it wicks the moisture away from baby's skin, so baby may not wake from the uncomfortable wet feeling of cotton. 2) You can increase the absorbency by adding microterry inserts without adding a lot of extra bulk. 3)They are simple to use for people familiar only with disposable diapers, so whenever someone else will be changing the baby I pack the diaper bag with a couple of those.
I know 3 Mom's who have switched to cloth diapers on their 3rd or 4th baby and their husbands have been reluctant. Switching to these has made the transition easier, otherwise they probably wouldn't have done it.
I'm glad there are so many options in cloth diapering now, what works for one family isn't always the best choice for another.
Best Wishes, K.
