Cleaning Smoke/fire Damage

My MIL is getting her house ready to sell and accidentally left the self-cleaning oven on for 3 days...with a wooden cutting board in it. Now, all the newly painted walls, carpet, sink, tub and appliances are covered in a yellow film (except for the areas that were covered, like where the sponge was sitting on the sink). It is really visible on surfaces like the sink and tub. Do you know of any cleaners that will remove this? (we've tried turpentine, ammonia, abrasive bleach scrubs...nothing is working) Also, did you end up hiring someone to clean it, or did you clean it yourself?

What can I do next?

If you have a Servpro in your area, I would recommend giving them a call. they specialize in fire and smoke damage.

I would hire a professional catastrophic cleaner. A maid service may not due. Crystal restoration services comes to mind. They ate based out of Southington Ct. Good luck, I hope this helps.

You might try a product called "Odo-ban". I believe it is sold at Costco. (We use it at work..and I work in a doggy daycare..some real bad smells sometimes :). I am not sure if it will work to clean everything but it doesn't hurt most carpet if you mist it on with a spray bottle and let it sit over night. Then use a "shop vac" or heavier vaccuum when it is dry to get really deep. Hydrogen peroxide might work on the white surfaces. Spray some on and let it sit for a bit and wipe it off. It dries fairly quickly. We use that at work to get stains out of white dogs' coats. (Like those big red stains sometimes on little dogs' eyes) It takes out blood on most surfaces..and doesn't harm fabric if you water it down. (Careful..test fabrics in inconspicuous places). Hope one of those helps. I think the Odo-ban is best for odors..and for some reason I am not allergic to the somewhat floral scent of it..and I don't know why but I love that too :) (Am severely allergic to many artificial floral scents..especially perfumes). Good luck!

Do it professionally. Use Service Master or another franchise like that. I think ServPro is another one (not sure of spelling). Ask your insurance company for recommendations - they use them all the time. We used someone recommended by our insurer when we lost part of our roof and had water damage - they were fantastic.

There should be a timer on the self-cleaning oven, by the way. My friend set hers on "clean" with plastic grocery bags on top - nearly lost her entire house. It had to be very nearly gutted. Tell MIL not to use this feature anymore!

You should hire someone to clean it. There are professionals out there who specialize in smoke damage.
In the end, you'll save your sanity.
