Cleaning down Mattress Pad

I have a down mattress size pillow that goes on top of the mattress. My son was sick the other day and slept with us. He peed the bed so all my blankets, sheets, etc needed washed. The down pillow thing is dryclean only. It is 30 to 40 dollars to dryclean this. Is there anyone who knows how I can clean it myself. It makes my bed a lot more comfortable since I have back problems. How can I clean it so it doesn't smell like pee?

What can I do next?

Yikes.. not much you can do.. I am not even sure if dry cleaning is going to work..

You can spot clean the fabric, but if the urine penetrated the down inside, not sure how to clean that,, There are 1000's of down feathers per square foot.

Even hanging it out side in the sun, will not take away the odor.

Is it stitched into squares or is one big pillow? If stiched into squares, if the dry cleaning does not work, you could consider patching it on the squares where he wet it,

How much do you love it? If you do attempt to DIY, you are risking ruining the entire thing.

First, how much is a new one? Second, how much is dry cleaning?

Figure out which works best for your budget and go from there. Personally, I'd buy a new one and put some sort of water proof protector on it if my child routinely slept around it.

I washed my down bedspread after a similar incident. I washed it normally with some oxiclean and the extra rinse cycle. I dried it on low with tennis balls. The balls helped the feathers not bunch up. It worked just fine.

Maybe one of those Dryel bags will work? Or- if you have a carpet spot cleaner that sucks up the water after it works on a spot for a particular amount of time...

Good luck!

This happened to us. I took it to a laundromat (wouldn't fit in my washer) and washed it myself. I used the biggest machine they had and washed it in hot water (with soap and one of those tide pods). I didn't stick it in the dryer. I did let it air dry. It was fine.

For what it's worth, I have washed many "dry clean only" items and they have come out just fine. If it's white, you could even put a little bleach, that's probably the only way to get rid of the smell.

I know you are risking it, but I have done this many times with good results. Also down comes out very nice after running through the dryer. Very fluffy.
