I have excellent HDL levels...I cook with olive oil or vegetable oil. I eat salmon usually 1-3 times per week. I often have quaker oats oatmeal cinamen or spice (from the packets) as a snack or mini meal. good luck

Hi S.~
I read the responses and everyone said take a pill or exercise. I've never heard exercise can raise the HDL in your blood but I'm not saying it doesn't happen either. Pills aren't the end all, either. I talk 2 supplements and 3 prescriptions and if I could cut them all out, I would in a NY minutes...
Anyway, I say eat more garlic. My HDL was checked about a yr. ago and it was at 80! The dr. asked me what I eat, since the average is 40 and I told him I eat a lot of garlic...about 1/2 to 1 head ~ DAILY! I know it's a lot but when was the last time you could eat something that's so good for you and no one says "Too much." You can roast it with a little olive oil and smear it on bread or put it in your mashed potatoes. I also slice or smash then slice it (depending on my mood) and saute it a little olive oil and have it with spaghetti. I'm Italian and a vegetarian and I everything I make starts with garlic. My significant other says "Start with garlic and see where it goes" and that's pretty much what I do.
Whatever you do, I wish you the very best of luck in getting this under control.
~J.
PS. My email address is ____@____.com if you want to email me directly, I'll be more than happy to share some of my non-vegetarian recipes with you, and show you other ways to eat your garlic with other things, too.

Exercise is it! I have also heard Omega-3 is great. Either in a pill or eat lots of salmon, avacado and olive oil.

Exercise is really only thing that raises HDL. Niacin works but has major side effects.

S.,
Using little or no oils - but the oils that you do use: olive oil is one of the best. I've heard mixed reviews about cooking with it. Switching from margarine or butter to olive oil on your toast is a good idea - my Dad does it - and you can have a little oregano or italian herbs sprinkled on. Pepper tastes awesome also.

Look online for other positive oils that can boost your HDL.

Don't look to 'add' so much to your diet as 'change' it. You can inadvertently increase your LDL while increasing your HDL, and triglycerides are also a winning factor in this combination also - you have to be careful of those also.

Another is flaxseed oil - but I don't know how it tastes. You would have to experiment with that and you might find that either using it as an olive oil/flaxseed 50-50 mix on your salad dressing is a better tasting alternative.

Good luck, and research, research, research!

Hi S.,
I take 2 Phytomega softgels from Melaleuca daily. They have both phytosterols and omega-3 fatty acids. They are terrific with no side effects like we get from prescription meds. Email me and I'll be happy to talk with you about it. L.
