Cheap and Easy Sewing Patterns?

I am teaching myself to sew, and I would like to find some cheap and easy patterns to make something simple for my kids - maybe a pillowcase dress or something. I went to Jo An Fabrics and also to Hobby Lobby, but the easiest pattern I could find still looked pretty complicated, and they were expensive (almost $15 for a pattern!). I also looked at Walmart, but couldn't find anything simple enough. I'm VERY much a beginning - in that I got my first sewing machine last month, and I've only used it to hem so far. So I need a very simple pattern, and I don't want to pay too much for it since I don't know how well this will go. Can anyone advise?

What can I do next?

Google free patterns. You should come up with some pretty easy ones. Here are a few:

http://houseonhillroad.typepad.com/photos/twirly_skirt/ (I've made several of these. I added length to them and took away bulk (longer, thinner measurements because my girls are tall and very skinny)

Be sure to surf around these websites to see if you see more things to try. And, they might have links that you can check into more. Enjoy!

You can find SO many patterns for free online! When I am first learning something I like to find tutorials. There are pictures of the steps and great directions. Google pillow case dress tutorial, or whatever it is you want to make. You'll find some great patterns!

i agree that googling tutorials is a great way to start. It's better than patterns because there are step by step picture to show you what to do.

I started with drawstring back pack bags for my kids. that was pretty easy and fun.

I like making pocket tissue holders as gifts, 15 mins.

the directions for the piillowcase dresses are on line too.

I just made a wrap around skirt for my dd's american girl doll that was pretty easy.

personanlly i would start on the internet, patterns can be pretty complicated.

Wait for a sale at Hobby Lobby. They have one or the other brand of patterns on sale each quarter.

McCalls pattern's are on sale this week for $0.99. That is the most reasonable they will every be.

In the next couple of weeks the Simplicity will be on sale if they weren't all ready in the past couple of weeks. They do this sale every 3 months or so.

Bottom right corner is the sale for the fabric department:

I suggest you sign up for a basic sewing class at your local fabric store. They're inexpensive and you'll gain knowledge and confidence.

There are inexpensive patterns displayed on the wall or in a turn around. Ask for them at the fabric store. And fabric stores have frequent sales during which the patterns are marked down.

I have also seen books that have pictures and show simple patterns. One was titles something similar as what to sew with a yard of fabric. Look at Amazon books. Here is one book. http://www.amazon.com/Fabric-Fabric-One-Yard-Wonders-Proj...

This page lists several different books. http://www.amazon.com/My-Favorite-Sewing-Books/lm/RHNIAZS...

Hi! did you get on JoAnn's mailing list? They often have patterns for 99cents as well. I'd look for you but my daughter must have taken the ad (she's the sewer). Ask around locally for bargain fabric stores. We only buy fabric in JoAnn's when we need something really specific or a tiny piece, the bargain place won't sell less than a yard but at $1.99 its tough to beat! Have fun.
