Cavity Was Filled and Needs to Be Refilled??

Hi, I'm 32 and just had my first ever cavity a year ago. I've been going to a dentist in Robbinsdale and never had any problems (what problems can you have with cleanings, anyway?!). I had him fill my cavity with the white resin filling material.

It's been a year and I still can't eat on that side of my mouth because it hurts so bad. I have gotten dental floss stuck/shredded between my back two teeth, too. I became pregnant shortly after I had it filled, so I've wanted to wait to do any x-rays, etc. to fix it. I went back in shortly after I gave birth and he drilled some of the filling material out and asked me to see if it got better after that. Well, it hasn't. He said if it didn't get better he'd have to take the filling out and refill it.

I've never heard of anyone having to have their filling re-done, but I don't have alot of experience at the dentist, either. So, has anyone ever heard of this? Any advice or referrals to other dentists that you can give me??

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I've had this happen to me before - not with a filling for a cavity, but with a fake tooth - er, half fake. When I was in jr. high I got hit with a tennis racket and it knocked out the bottom half of my front tooth. There was something they attached to my remaining (healthy) tooth to make it even.

The first time it was fixed it looked sloppy and sure enough, a year later, it fell off. The second time I got it fixed, the dentist was like, "Oh who ever did this the first time was really sloppy about it or didn't know what they were doing!" Looks at my chart, and it was him....

Yeah, so the first filling was probably done half-a** (or by someone inexperienced) and thats why it still hurts. My dentist told me that a cavity should not hurt a week after it's been filled - and if it DOES hurt, either something is awry with the filling or the cavity is worse than what was seen on the x-ray. I was teetering between a root canal or a large filling when I was told this - and the filling worked.

The only reason I would consider having the same dentist re-doing it is so that you can get it fixed right at a reduced cost or free. When my dentist realized he was the one that did the botched job on my front tooth before, he didn't charge the second time. This was a dentist in Brooklyn Park about 10 yrs ago so unfortunately I don't remember his name. Either way, after that, I switched dentists and haven't had a problem with the front tooth since. Now I use Metro Dental and haven't had problems. I specifically go to the downtown Minneapolis location - but I would imagine locations would be the same.

Good luck! And congrats on making it so far without a cavity - pregnancy wrecked havoc on my teeth so I'm infinitely jealous!

Hi M.,

I used to work in the dental industry and what you describe does happen sometimes. Usually it's because the dentist is not that experienced using the filling material. It's like the foundation of a house, if something isn't right in the beginning, it can cause problems later. Often it's because moisture gets trapped between the tooth and the material leading to pain later on because there wasn't good adhesion between the two.

I just moved here myself so haven't found a dentist yet. However, here's a link to a professional group that has some of the best dentists out there (being a member of this group requires that these dentists take ongoing education so they are up-to-date on latest techniques, materials, etc): http://www.agd.org/public/FindaDentist/

Hope this helps.

A.

My boss had to have a root canal redone, so who knows? Like doctors, you could get a second opinion. I hope that it does get resolved quickly for you though.

My friend is my dentist and I trust her completely. She's at Park Dental - Ridgedale in Minnetonka. Her name is Dr. Balfour.
